A cursory search of the archive didn't turn up any extended discussion of the performance. What do the less enthusiastic object to? |
Kirk McElhearn wrote (March 6, 2002):
[To Craig Schweickert] I don't recall, but I do remember that it did not elicit much praise. Perhaps because a lot of members don't know it? Brad, you must? Don? |
Donald Satz wrote (March 6, 2002):
[To Kirk McElhearn] I don't think I've ever heard the Ross Partitas. What label is it on? |
Riccardo Nughes wrote (March 6, 2002):
[To Donald Satz] Erato-Ultima 2cd budget price, european release. |
Michael Grover wrote (March 6, 2002):
[To Riccardo Nughes] The Ross set is currently for sale at BRO, $14 for the 2 disc set: http://www.broinc.com/
And to repeat my earlier question, to which I got no reply, has no one heard the partitas performed by Zhu Xiao-Mei on piano? I assume by the silence that no one has. A cursory search of the web didn't turn up any information on them, either. I suppose I'll have to get them ordered and be the first reviewer. :) |
Bradley Lehman wrote (March 6, 2002):
[To Donald Satz] Nor have I. And other priorities keep crowding out my intentions to pick up his Goldbergs someday. (I'd be getting that one mainly to round out my Frescobaldi collection, anyway, rather than for yet another Goldbergs....)
Somewhere years ago I picked up an impression that Ross' playing is generally on the emotionally-reserved side, from listening to some of his recordings of French and Italian music borrowed from friends and libraries. It just never grabbed me enough to go buy many for myself. This afternoon I listened to a CBC compilation of Ross recordings: Philips, Byrd, d'Anglebert, Louis Couperin, Frescobaldi, Scarlatti, Soler. It's still failed to grab me. It's all a pretty surface, middle-of-the-road.
His delivery strikes me as too objective and generic, maybe impersonal. Reliably straightforward, "nice." Everything cleanly in place (OK, some minor technical slips, too, hardly noticeable) but not meaning a whole lot beyond the page. Respectable. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.
It's sort of like listening to Eugene Ormandy recordings of the standard orchestral repertoire: nice preparation, beautifully played, all elements in moderation, an easy flow...but at the end you realize nothing in your life has changed through the listening experience, and nothing has been memorable. Just nice. No risks. Stimulate the ear pleasantly without really guiding it in any specific direction. If I wanted some impersonal passive entertainment, I might as well get a bowl of vanilla ice cream and sit in front of the TV.
[An exception is Ormandy's exciting "Belshazzar's Feast" by Walton, but we digress.]
Anybody want to talk about Ormandy's Bach? There was that B Minor Mass where the chorus rushes almost a whole bar ahead of the orchestra, and a hugely awful splice at the "Quoniam"...yow. Less memorably there was the "Bach By Ormandy" LP of middle-of-the-road orchestrations played with middle-of-the-road beauty. Nice one there. Nice. (I do like it.) There were the obligatory "greatest hits" things, and those moderate violin concertos with Stern. I don't remember his Easter Oratorio and Magnificat; didn't make an impression, and too long ago. What else? |
Craig Schweickert wrote (March 7, 2002):
[To Donald Satz] Originally Erato, now on a bargin-priced Ultima (Warner) towfer (3984-28167-2). |
Kirk McElhearn wrote (March 7, 2002):
[To Donald Satz] Erato. |
Pablo Fagoaga wrote (March 9, 2002):
[To Kirk McElhearn] More recently, Teldec "borrowed" Ross' partitas for BACH 2000. |
