Partitas BWV 825-830
Played by Andrew Rangell |
Rangell's Bach? |

I'm enjoying pianist Andrew Rangell's CD "A Recital of Intimate Works, Vol 2" and will probably also pick up volume 1 sometime: where else can one get a piano performance of Sweelinck's "Mein junges Leben"? :)
Rangell's programs in both these cases are chosen by mood and flow, nicely programmed: going from Scarlatti into Brahms, then Ravel, then Schubert, going from Brahms into Gibbons into Mozart, etc. It's nice to hear things ordered by character and key sequence rather than trying to keep it chronological (as so many piano recitals tend to be). The Scarlatti/Brahms pair is so nice because the two pieces are in the same key and similar tempo. Rangell has a beautiful touch in these gentle works. Good disc to play late at night.
Anyway, I've seen that Rangell has also recorded the Goldbergs (plus the two MO ricercars) and the Partitas. From the web samples, I really like his natural easy flow, an effective way to play. Anybody have these and able to comment on them?

(That Vol 2 was an inspiration for my own "The Serene Clavichord" CD: similar mood of gentle works, and jumping around chronologically in the greater interest of album flow) |

[To Bradley Lehman] I have the Rangell Partitas set which is priced as one disc. The performances are very good; Rangell exhibits much rhythmic variety and tends to explore the music in comparison to Bernard Roberts who simply entertains. I think Rangell's set compares well with Hewitt's. My only reservation is that he sometimes get stuck in an intimate approach when I want some power and excitement. Given the low price, you can't go wrong by acquiring the set. |
