Born: April 15, 1732 (batised: April 22, 1732) - Triptis, about 45 km south-east of Weimar, Thuringia, Germany
Died: March 20, 1785 - Waldheim, Saxony, Germany |
Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Sonnenkalb was a German Kantor, organist and schoolmaster. He was born son of Johann Sonnenkalb (Rector in Triptis). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on December 16, 1746; studied there from 1746 to 1754; and was on friendly terms with J.S. Bach and his family. On June 25, 1754 he enrolled at the University of Leipzig, but in the same year he was appointed organist and Tertius (schoolmaster) at Herzberg (Elster), near Torgau. He was then Kantor and music director at the nearby Dahme (Mark) from 1759 to 1761. In 1761, he received accommodation in the Armenhaus (poor house) in Waldheim, where he died.
In a treatise published by Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg in 1759, Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Sonnenkalb reported that he "fast sechs Jahre auf dieser berühmten [Thomas-]Schule unter seiner [Bachs] Direction gestanden" (had been under his [Bachs] direction at this famous [Thomas] school for almost six years). He also attended concerts by the Bach family and enjoyed the acquaintance of J.S. Bach's sons. It is not certain whether this was accompanied by lessons with J.S. Bach.
