Johann Heinrich Schultze was born the son of Johann Christoph Schultze (tailor in Leipzig). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on May 15, 1748; studied there from 1748 to 1754, previously already as external; and at Universität Leipzig from 1753, 1754. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him.
