The eminent German musicologist, Max Schneider, He studied musicology at the University of Leipzig with Hugo Riemann and Hermann Kretzschmar, and harmony and composition with Salomon Jadassohn. He continued his musicological training at the University of Berlin (Ph.D., 1917), where he was a librarian from 1904 to 1907); then was assistant librarian at the Royal Library from 1907 to 1914.
Max Schneider conducted in Halle from 1897 to 1901. He also taught at the Church Music Institute in Berlin. Then he was a professor at the Universities of Breslau from 1915 to 1928, and Halle from 1928 to 1960. He published Beiträge zu einer Anleitung Clavichord und Cembalo zu spielen (Strasbourg, 1934) and Beiträge zur MusikforsSchung (vol. I, Halle, 1935). He did useful work in compiling miscellaneous bio-bibliographical materials in music, and edited numerous important bibliographical surveys. He also edited the works of Heinrich Schütz. He enjoyed a well-merited reputation in Germany as a thorough scholar. He was honoured 3 times by Festschrifts: H. Zingel, editor, Festschrift Max Schneider zum 60. Geburtstag (Halle, 1935), W.
