Johann Jacob Sauter (Organ, Watchmaker, Bach's Pupil) |
Born: June 28, 1707 - Mönchsroth, near Oettingen, Bavaria, Germany
Died: November 22, 1741 - Oettingen, Bavaria, Germany |
Johann Jacob Sauter was born the son of Johann Thomas Sauter (Hufschmied). His name appears in Cabinet Chancellor List with Albrecht Ernst II of Oettingen-Oettingen. From about 1732 he worked as city organist at St. Jakob in Oettingen (on behalf of Johann Christoph Faber, appointed substitute in 1738), also worked as a watchmaker.
The Kaufbeuren Kantor Martin Schweyer described Johann Jacob Sauter around 1755 as a good organist, "der auch zugleich die Composition verstund, und des Bachs in Leipzig Clavier Sachen, fertig wegspielte" (who also understood the composition, and the way Bach in Leipzig finished playing the keyboard stuff). Although this does not yet prove that he was J.S. Bach's, it would be difficult to explain how J.J. Sauter should otherwise have owned J.S. Bach's music as early as the 1730's. In addition, his early years of life are still unclear and a stay in Leipzig is quite conceivable, although not proven by the university matriculation.
