The German composer, Ernst Naumann, was the son of the mineralogist Karl Friedrich Naumann, who was the eldest of three sons of Johann Gottlieb Naumann (1741-1801), a well-known composer in his days. Ernst studied the organ with Johann Schneider, and composition with Moritz Hauptmann.
From 1860 Ernst Naumann was organist and musik-director in Jena, and from 1877 professor. He published an excellent treatise, Über die verschiedenen Bestimmungen der Tonverhältnisse (Leipzig, 1858), as well as some music, among which may be named two string quintets, and a serenade for strings and wind. |
