Johann Gottlob Lange was born the son of Johann Lange (tailor in Leipzig). He enrolled at the Thomaschule on May 16, 1722; studied there from 1722 to 1732; and at Universität Leipzig in 1727, 1729. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him. J.S. Bach reported (August 23, 1730): “usable for 1st Choir (figural music)”; Prefect. After his studies, he worked as excise taker in Leipzig.
