Heinrich August Gerlach (Medical Doctor, Librettist, Bach's Pupil) |
Born: c1708 - Calbitz, Saxony, Germany
Died: December 10, 1759 - Hamburg, Germany |
Heinrich August Gerlach was born the son of Melchior Gotthelf Gerlach (Pastor in Calbitz). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on May 18, 1720; studied there from 1720 to 1727; and at Universität Leipzig from 1729. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him. He obtained his Magister in Wittenberg in 1733; and studied also at Universität Erfurt, completing his doctorate in philosophy and on September 28, 1741 in medicine.
After his studies, Heinrich August Gerlach worked as Medical Doctor in Hamburg. He is the author of the libretto Gottselige Gedanken Bey dem Kreuze Unsers Erlösers, which was performed by Johann Adolph Scheibe in 1742. On November 10, 1742, he was elected with the academic epithet Gesius II as a member (matriculation number 529) of the Leopoldina. His elder brother, Carl Gotthelf Gerlach (1704-1761), was also a Thomaner (1716-1723).
