Christoph Gottlieb Pröber was a German Kantor and composer. He was born the son of He Christoph Fröber (schoolmaster in Langhennersdorf); at from 1715 attended the Gymnasium in Freiberg. He studied at the University of Leipzig from 1726 to 1731 (enrolled on September 21, 1726), and during that time he also studied privately with J.S. Bach. On April 15, 1729 (Good Friday) Brockes-Passion setting probably by him was performed under his direction in the Neukirche in Leipzig (not known whose music was heard; considerably shortened, evidently omitting approximately half of the arias), but his application for the vacant organist's post there was unsuccessful the following month. The office went to Carl Gotthelf Gerlach. In 1731 he was appointed Kantor at Delitzsch, where he seems to have spent the rest of his days. There he also started a Collegium Musicum based on the model.
According to a correspondence from 1824, J.S. Bach is said to have recommended Christoph Gottlieb Pröber for the Delitzsch's Kantor office in 1731. It is no longer possible to determine whether a student relationship was specifically mentioned in a letter of recommendation that may have existed in J.S. Bach's history, but cannot be found today. In addition, J.S. Bach's name is not mentioned in the available documents on C.G. Fröber's employment. All that can be proven is that C.G. Fröber was a member of the Collegium Musicum of Georg Balthasar Schott in Leipzig. It is not certain that he still belonged to the ensemble after it was taken over by J.S. Bach in 1729. He probably founded his own (even if only short-lived) Collegium Musicum in 1729 and even entered into competition with J.S. Bach. He is identified in J.S. Bach manuscripts as Anon. L 59.
