Johann Gottfried Böhme (Musician, Tenor, Bach's Pupil) |
Born: June 2, 1717 - Görlitz, Saxony, Germany
Died: not determined |
Johann Gottfried Böhme was born the son of Jeremias Böhme (customs officer in Görlitz). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on November 18, 1732; studied there from from 1732 to 1733, since October 2, 1732 already as external; early escape from the school together with Christoph Nichelmann (B-20). He was Thomaner and, according to his own data, pupil of J.S. Bach. He later worked as a musician in Hamburg and was a pupil of Georg Philipp Telemann. From 1743 he worked as a tenor at the Bremen Cathedral. He was probably unsuccessful in an application for a similar post at the Bremen city churches. Further whereabouts unknown.
Johann Gottfried Böhme wrote in his application in 1743 that he had "insonderheit der Composition beflissen, welche besonders nach Anweisung Bachs und Telemanns excoliret" (pondered on the particular composition, which especially according to Bach and Telemann's instructions). However, it is uncertain whether he actually meant J.S. Bach or not his son Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, who was still in Leipzig at the time in question in 1732/1733 and was also the teacher of J.G. Böhme's apparent school friend Christoph Nichelmann.
