Heinrich Friedrich Innozenz [Innocens, Innocentius] Apel was born the son of Johann David Apel (businessman in Borna). He enrolled at the Thomasschule in Leipzig on May 18, 1746; studied there from 1746 to 1751; and law at Universität Leipzig from 1752, where he did his doctorate and received a Dr. jur. Although he attended the Thomasschule during J.S. Bach's tenure, it is not known if he actually studied with him.
In 1775 Heinrich Friedrich Innozenz Apel was appointed Electoral Royal Court and Justice Council. In 1778 he was elected to the City Council of Leipzig. In Leipzig he was city judge from 1793, master builder from 1799 and scabinus (lay judge) from 1801. In the same year he became Mayor of the city of Leipzig. From 1779 onwards, Apel was Canonicus (clergyman), later subordinate and Scholasticus (scholastic) of the Stifts zu Zeitz. He was the owner of the estates Ermlitz, Trautzschen and Costewitz.
In 1800 Heinrich Friedrich Innozenz Apel donated 2,400 thalers to the Thomasschule, the interest of which was to be used to pay a math teacher. In his will, he once again awarded the Thomasschule with 1,600 thalers, the council free school with 1,000 thalers to be spent on clothing for needy pupils, and apprentices in the tailoring and shoemaking craft with 600 thalers. His youngest son was the lawyer and writer August Apel (1771-1816), his grandson the writer and founder Theodor Apel (1811-1867). Another grandson was Julius Freiherr von Apel (1805-1881), who embarked on a military career and brought it up to lieutenant general in the Saxon army. |
