Zaans Cantatekoor was a high-quality choir founded in 1977 by Jan Pasveer, which aimed to perform a vocal work by J.S. Bach every month. These concerts "Bach in de Bullekerk", in the Bullekerk in Zaandam, have since attracted many visitors - and not just because admission remained free.
In addition to J.S. Bach's works, the choir has built up an extensive repertoire of songs sung a cappella from different periods. The permanent organist is Cor Brandenburg. The Zaans Cantatekoor made several foreign tours and performed many times for the radio. The Stichting Vrienden van het Zaans Cantatekoor aimed to take away organizational and financial concerns from the choir. In their final concert, on June 29, 2002, the Zaans Cantatekoor performed J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor BWV 232.
When the Zaans Cantatekoor ceased to exist in 2002, many people wished the J.S. Bach tradition to continue. As a result Collegium Vocale Zaandam: Barok in de Bullekerk was established, led by Cor Brandenburg, a student of Jan Pasveer and organ player in Jan Pasveer's concert series. The choir is accompanied by the professional Baroque orchestra "Eik en Linde", that plays old instruments or copies thereof (all in old tuning), in an attempt to approach the sound in J.S. Bach's days. |
