Eduard Wollitz (Bass)

Born: October 28, 1928 - Hamburg, Germany

The German bass, Eduard Wollitz, received his violin and piano instruction already when he was 9 years old; then he was choir boy St. Michaelis in Hamburg. Since 1946 he studied for Kapellmeister at that Hamburg's Musikhochschule, since 1948 singing training by Mrs. Bertha Dammann in Hamburg.

Eduard Wollitz appeared occasionally on the concert podium, however worked first as choir leader, song companion and repetitor. In 1952 he began his stage career at the Stadttheater of Darmstadt. After the Stadttheater of Heidelberg he came to the Opernhaus of Wuppertal and worked then from 1963 to 1965 at the Opernhaus Zürich. Since 1966 he was first respectable bass at the Staatstheater of Wiesbaden. Here with his numerous appearances he sang major roles, such as Gurnemanz in Parsifal, König Marke in Tristan, Daland in Fliegenden Holländer, Landgrafen in Tannhäuser, Sarastro in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Ochs in Rosenkavalier, La Roche in Capriccio by R. Strauss and Rocco in L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio.

Apart from his affecting performance on the stage, Eduard Wollitz had a second, just as important, career as concert and in particular as oratorio singer. Appearances and concerts in the German big cities, in Amsterdam, Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon, Strasbourg, Geneva, Vienna, Warsaw, Rome, Venice, Naples, Turin, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Teheran, Portland (USA) and Los Angeles. He participated in the Festival of Wiesbaden, in the Händel-Festspielen Göttingen, in the Maggio Musicale Florence, in the Festwochen of Zürich and Bachwoche Ansbach.

Since 1974 apart from his engagement in Wiesbaden, Eduard Wollitz has been Professor for singing at the University of Mainz.

Recordings: Vox (L'Incoronazione di Poppea und Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria by Monteverdi, Elias by Felix Mendelssohn, Requiems of Verdi and W.A. Mozart), Cantate (J.S. Bach Cantatas), Opus (Cäcilienmesse by Cherubini). His performances were also broadcast by many German and Western European radio stations, and German, French, Swiss and Danish television.
