Geneviève Tschumi (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Germany

The German mezzo-soprano, Geneviève Tschumi, received her vocal training from Ulla Groenewold, Helga Kutter, Professor Yvi Jänicke (HfMT Hamburg) and Professor Ute Trekel-Burckhardt (UdK Berlin). She received further vocal and musical inspiration from Peter Maus, Lars Woldt, Roberta Invernizzi, Burkhard Kehring, Bernhard Forck and Eric Schneider. She received first prize for Central German Baroque music at the IX. Internationalen Telemann-Wettbewerb in Magdeburg. In addition to the main prize, she was awarded the special prize for a concert at the Magdeburger Telemann-Festtagen 2018 and the special prize for a concert at the Bachfest Leipzig 2018. In the summer of 2016, she was named Bach Prize winner at the Internationalen Bachwettbewerb in Leipzig, where she also won the special prize from the Leipziger Barockorchester.

Geneviève Tschumi is a busy concert performer. She has performed the great works of J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart's Great Mass in C minor and Requiem, Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah, Dvořák's Stabat Mater and Johannes Brahms' Alto Rhapsody, among others. In 2016 she sang J.S. Bach's alto solo cantata Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust BWV 170 together with the Leipziger Barockorchester at the Benediktbeuern Monastery. Concert tours have taken her to Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Denmark and Russia. In 2017 she sang the alto part of George Frideric Handel's Messiah at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. In 2018 she was heard at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival under the direction of Kit Armstrong and the Ensemble Bell'arte Salzburg. In the same year she performed at the Telemann-Festtagen Magdeburg and the Bachfest Leipzig.

On the opera stage, Geneviève Tschumi was seen in the role of Arsamene from G.F. Handel's Xerxes at the Opernfestival Gut Immling in 2015 and as Orlofsky from Johann Strauss' Fledermaus at the operetta gala there. In the same year, she took on the role of Arbace from G.F. Handel's Catone in Utica at the opera festival Opera Barga in Italy. At the beginning of 2016, she played the role of Annio from W.A. Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito in Gidon Saks' production at the UdK Berlin. In the summer of 2016, she sang the role of Madame Laperouse in Aribert Reimann's Melusine under the musical direction of Errico Fresis and directed by Frank Hilbrich at the UdK Berlin. From 2016 to 2018 she performed as Siegrune in Wagner's Walküre at the Theater Kiel, and in the summer of 2018 at the Teatro Guaira (Brazil) as Hänsel in Engelbert Humperdinck's opera Hänsel und Gretel. In the summer of 2019 she sang the role of Penelope in Monteverdi's Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria at Schloss Waldegg (Switzerland). At the same venue in the summer of 2021 she played the role of Ottavia in Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea. The entire opera was released on CD by Rondeau in autumn 2022. Other CD recordings: J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion BWV 244 (Rondeau) under the direction of the Frauenkirche Kantor Matthias Grünert, Georg Caspar Schürmann's opera Jason oder die Eroberung des Goldenen Fleece with the Barockwerk Hamburg under the direction of Ira Hochman.
