The German pianist, Claudius Tanski, began studying the piano at the age of 14 at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen (with Michael Deichmann and Georg Stieglitz). After completing his studies in Essen in 1978 he pursued further studies (also conducting and song accompaniment) in Salzburg, Vienna (with Professor Hans Leygraf and Professor Heinz Medjimorec), and Munich. Upon conclusion of his formal studies, Alfred Brendel was to become his most important teacher. He is the recipient of a number of major distinctions and international prizes (Vercelli, Bolzano, and Budapest among others).
Claudius Tanski has appeared as soloist and chamber musician at numerous important festivals in Lockenhaus, Schleswig-Holstein, Carinthischer Sommer, Rheingau, MDR-Musiksommer, Ostrów, Warsaw, and Atlanta. Touring activity has been undertaken in the USA, South America, Japan and Far East. In 1998 the Independent called him a "King-size-virtuoso". In September and October 1999 a tour sponsored by the Hypo-Stiftung Munich led him to the leading musical centres in Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich, Stuttgart and Prague. As soloist he has performed under the baton of Yuri Termirkanov, Martin Sieghart, István Dénes, Heinz Wallberg, George Hanson, and David Stern among others. In the 2000-2001 season he performed in Austria, Germany, Slowenia, and Italy as well as in South America and China.
Also being an avid chamber musician, Claudius Tanski performs with such partners as the Consortium Classicum or the Leipziger Streichquartett as well as Frank Peter Zimmermann, Tabea Zimmermann, Boris Pergamenschikov, Hansjörg Schellenberger, Alois Brandhofer, Sebastian Weigle, Benjamin Schmid, and Clemens Hagen. He has further accompanied Rita Streich and Eva Lind in song recitals.
Claudius Tanski has taught at the University of Music and Performing Arts Mozarteum in Salzburg since 1988.
More than 20 CD recordings including works for piano, chambermusic and orchestral concertos) have been released by MDG (Dabringhaus & Grimm) in Detmold, among them several première recordings. Claudius Tanski has received the coveted "Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik" a total of six times, and addtionally English, French, American and Australian distinctions for his recordings. In September 1997 he was awarded the Echo Classic Prize of the Deutsche Phonoakademie and the ZDF. His latest recordings for MDG include a CD with works by F. Schubert and R. Schumann, a first recording of the piano concerto op. 36 and Symphony No. 1 op. 12 by Felix Draeseke, a CD with works by Franz Liszt and two chambermusic recordings with Benjamin Schmid (violin) and Clemens Hagen (cello) with works by Hans Pfitzner and Adolf von Henselt. In co-production with the German TV-stations N3 and ARD he created portraits of Ferruccio Busoni, Julius Reubke and Felix Draeseke. |
