Okawa Tan (Tenor)

Born: January 6, ____ - Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia

The Malaysian tenor, Okawa Tan (Chinese: 陳大川), being influenced by his parents, has developed an interest and passion in music, and started singing in church choirs since he was a kid. While he was still in the BCCMA choir, he was a chorus member when they performed Felix Mendelssohn's Oratorios, Elijah and St. Paul. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia (2012-2017). Under the teaching of Dr. Wayne Kompelien, he performed as Tom in Igor Stravinsky's The Rake’s Progress, Peppe in I Pagliacci, Ferrando in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte, Eisenstein and Alfredo in Die Fledermaus with Liberty University Opera. He also appeared as tenor soloist for George Frideric Handel's Messiah and W.A. Mozart's Requiem. He won the Honors designation at in a couple of Virginia NATS competitions. In 2016, he was awarded the “Opera Musician of the Year” of Liberty University School of Music.

For the last couple years, Okawa Tan has been actively providing vocal trainings and choral workshops in local churches. As a lover of choral music, he is going to start pursuing his Master’s degree (MA) in choral conducting this coming Fall (2017) in the renowned Eastman School of Music. He currently lives in Lynchburg, Virginia.
