Siegfried Stöckigt (Piano)

Born: December 8, 1929 - Lengenfeld, Saxony, Germany
Died: July 6, 2012 - Germany

The German pianist and composer, Siegfried Stöckigt, grew up with a three-year-older brother in the small town of Lengenfeld (Amtshauptmannschaft Auerbach) in the Saxon Vogtland, the son of a businessman. At the age of 9, he received first piano lessons. From 1946 to 1959, he studied in piano at Hugo Steurer at the Hochschule für Musik in Leipzig. He passed his examination with distinction.

In 1951, Siegfried Stöckigt emerged as the only German prize-winners at the Weltfestspielen der Jugend und Studenten (World Festival of Youth and Students) in Berlin. From 1952 to 1985 he taught at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin and in 1968 was appointed Professor. In 1959 he received a medal at the International Music Competition in Geneva. In 1966 he was awarded the Kunstpreis der DDR; 1974, the medal of honor of the Verbandes der Komponisten und Musikwissenschaftler (Association of Composers and Musicologists); and in October 1974 he was honored with the Nationalpreis der DDR.

Guest performances have taken Siegfried Stöckigt to several countries in Europe, South America and Central America, and the Middle East. He made LP, radio and television recordings. Apart from the interpretation of classical music, he operated also in the field of upscale light music and jazz. In this area, he also appeared under the name of Rainer Carell.

Besides his pianistic and pedagogic activities, Siegfried Stöckigt was a composerr and published chamber music, and concert music.

Siegfried Stöckigt was married to the broadcaster Annemarie Forkel-Stöckigt and lived most recently in Königs Wusterhausen. His son, Michael Stöckigt, is also a pianist.
