Jean Louis Steuerman (Piano)

Born: March 16, 1949 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The Brazilian pianist, Jean Louis Steuerman, was born in into a musical family. He began his studies at the age of four and made his debut with the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra when he was just fourteen (Rio de Janero, September 15, 1963). He first came to Europe after winning a scholarship to the Naples Conservatory in 1967. In 1972 he won the 2nd Prize at the J.S. Bach Competition in Leipzig and quickly gained recognition throughout Europe as a soloist and recitalist.

Jean Louis Steuerman made his London debut in 1976. Solo appearances with orchestras include concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra under Claudio Abbado, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under both Lord Yehudi Menuhin and Vladimir Ashkenazy (with whom he played the Benjamin Britten Concerto at the Athens Festival). He made his debut at the BBC Promenade Concerts in 1985 to great critical acclaim when he played Bach's Concerto in D minor with the Polish Chamber Orchestra.

Other orchestral engagements have included concerts with the English Chamber Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Bournemouth Sinfonietta. He has appeared with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under Kurt Masur, Sinfonieorchester Basel with Heinz Holliger, Helsinki Philharmonic (Tippett’s Piano Concerto), Zürich Tonhalle, Berliner Symphoniker, Nouvel Orchestre Philharmonique and the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano. Jean Louis Steuerman has also performed with many American orchestras including appearances with the Florida Philharmonic, Baltimore Symphony and Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He tours extensively throughout Europe, North America and Japan, appearing regularly in major recital series on both sides of the Atlantic. He also collaborates in chamber music with some of the world's finest musicians.

Jean Louis Steuerman's repertoire stretches across a wide range of periods and genres and he takes particular care to include late 20th century works in his recitals. He has premiered a number of important new works during recent years.

Jean Louis Steuerman's recordings for Philips Classics include Piano Sonatas 3, 4 & 5 of Scriabin; F. Mendelssohn's complete works for piano and orchestra with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra; J.S. Bach's Piano Concertos with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (Philips); and J.S. Bach's Six Partitas, Italian Concerto, French Overture, Chromatic Fantasia & Fugue, etc.(Philips) for which he was awarded the prestigious Le Diapason d'Or. He has also recorded three newly completed piano suites by Girolamo Arrigo and the complete piano works of Othmar Schoeck, which were released at the end of 1999. In autumn 2002 Actés Suds released his recording of J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations (BWV 988) to universal acclaim. In 2003 Leonard Bernstein's The Age of Anxiety was released on Naxos and in 2004 BIS released Bachianas Brasileiras No. 3 by Heitor Villa-Lobos. In (2006 Actés Sud released Jean Louis' recordings of solo piano music by Robert Schumann and by Arnold Schoenberg and more releases were planned.
