The American tenor and music pedagogue, Blake Stern, earned a bachelor's degree from Grinnell College in 1940. He served as an intelligence officer in the US Navy during World War II. then continued his education at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied with Julius Herford and Mack Harrell, receiving the M.S. in 1950.
Blake Stern was best known as an oratorio singer. He sang the role of the Evanglist in the Passion of J.S. Bach and Heinrich Schütz. A frequent guest artist at Tanglewood, he also performed during his career at such venues as Carnegie Hall and Town Hall in New York City. He performed with many leading orchestras and conductors in America and around the world.
After teaching at the University of Minnesota (where he also was a membber of the University Chamber Singers), Blake Stern joined the faculty of the Yale School of Music in 1955; he was an esteemed voice teacher and remained there for 32 years until his retirement in June 1987. Among his notable pupils were the tenor John Stewart and the counter-tenor Jeffrey Gall. |
