Gerhard Radatz (Bass)

Born: Eisenstadt, Austria

The Austrian bass, Gerhard Radatz, studied after school first computer science at the Technical University of Vienna. He began his music education with piano at early childhood. Later he studied Organ with Elfi Stadlmann at the Joseph Haydn Conservatoire in Eisenstadt, a major mentor figure who also initiated his interest in singing. After her early death he continued his organ studies with Thomas Schmögner. He studied singing with Kammersängerin Hilde Rössel-Majdan at the Goethe Conservatoire in Vienna and Kammersänger Wicus Slabbert, and attended master-classes of Professor Julia Hamari (Stuttgart), Professor Walter Moore (Vienna) and Professor Paul Hamburger (London). He received the Bayreuth Scholarship of the International Richard Wagner Foundation and was a finalist of the competition XXVIII Concorso Internazionale di Musica da Camera della Città di Finale Ligure «Palma d’Oro» (silver medal) as well as semifinalist of the competition Vox Artis Sibiu/Hermannstadt 2012 (Romania).

Besides operatic and concert performances, Gerhard Radatz also dedicates himself to church music and performs as a soloist in the major churches of Vienna (e.g. St. Stephens Cathedral, Calvary church, St. Peters church). He performed with renowned orchestras such as the Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, Radio Symphony Orchestra Bratislava and Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

Gerhard Radatz have appeared in numerous performances, including: Spreaker and Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte by W.A. Mozart; Bass soloist in numerous cantatas and oratorios, e.g. Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) and Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) by J.S. Bach, Stabat mater by G. Rossini, The Seven Last Words of Christ by J. Haydn, Stabat mater by J. Haydn, Messias by George Frideric Handel, Matthäus-Passion by (Heinrich Schütz); Bass soloist in numerous masses of composers such as Johann Joseph Fux, Schubert, Haydn, Mozart, L.v. Beethoven etc. - e.g. in St. Stephens Cathedral Vienna (broadcast by Radio Stephansdom), conducted by maestros J. Ebenbauer and M. Landerer, and Calvary church, conducted by Elisabeth Zottele.

Gerhard Radatz has given Lieder recitals with works of F. Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms (including Vier ernste Gesänge, Liebeslieder), CCarl Loewe, A. Borodin, Hugo Wolf (Italienisches Liederbuch), e.g. in Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna and in Haus Hofmannsthal.

Recent engagements have included: May 2007: Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte in Tel Aviv, Israel, performed in co-operation with Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (Conductor: Zeev Dorman; Director: Diana Kienast / Wiener Staatsoper); July/August 2008: Hermit in C.M. v. Weber’s Freischütz at the open air arena of Rathen near Dresden; October 2008: Bass soloist in Verdis Requiem; March 2009: Bass soloist in Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) by J.S. Bach, conducted by Elisabeth Zottele and Matthias Krampe; April 2009: Opening concert of the International Singing Competition Passau with scenes from Verdi’s Nabucco, Donizetti’s Don Pasquale and Lieder by Strauss; October 2009: Consiglio in Rappresentazione di anima e di corpo by Emilio de’ Cavalieri, conducted by Dr. Rudolf Scholz (available on DVD); November 2009: Bass soloist in the celebration concert for the 50. anniversary of the Complete Edition of Johann Joseph Fux' works, performed in the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna; March 2010: Concert in St. Peters Church, Vienna with compositions by Heinrich Schütz and J.S. Bach; Oktober 2011: Bass soloist in The Seasons by Joseph Haydn
