Carles Ponseti Verdaguer (Conductor)

Born: Balearic Islands, Spain

The Spanish conductor and music pedagogue, Carles Ponseti Verdaguer, studied singing, piano, cello and conducting. He attended various courses, both in the Spanish State and abroad.

Carles Ponseti Verdaguer debuted as conductor in the choir “Es Taller”. Shortly after he formed and sang the vocal group "Discantus" specializing in Renaissance music. In 1982 he founded the Cor de Cambra Studium. In 1986 he began to conduct the Orquestra de Cambra, Jove Acadèmia Instrumental, from the end of 1993. He directed the “Pro Música Chorus” of Sòller from 1986 to 1992. In 1992 he created the Orquestra Barroca Espanyola for the duration of the vocal-instrumental projects, a group that uses instruments of the period and historicist criteria. In 1993 he was named director of the Jove Orquestra Simfònica de les Balears, which he directed until the end of 1998. In 1999 he created the Studium Aureum group to interpret and represent Early Music.

As a cellist, Carles Ponseti Verdaguer has played with the Baroque group “Tafelmusik”, and on the harpsichord with the group “Concert Barroc”.

As a creator, producer and musical director, Carles Ponseti Verdaguer has staged operas, oratorios and shows such as Purcell's Dido & Eneas; Monteverdi in Venezia and Vespres by Monteverdi; Jephte and Jonas by Carissimi; Spiritual Christma by Heinrich Schütz; Apollo & Dafne and Sunt Lacrimae by George Frideric Handel; Die Tageszeiten by Georg Philipp Telemann...

In the field of vocal-instrumental music, Carles Ponseti Verdaguer has conducted, among others, the operas Die Zauberflöte, La finta semplice, Bastien und Bastienne by W.A. Mozart; King Arthur by Purcell; Le astucie feminile by Cimarosa; Agua, azucarillos i aguardiente by Chueca...; From the choral-orchestral repertoire, he has conducted, among others: The Messiah by G.F. Handel; Wheihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248), Cantatas and Magnificat (BWV 243) by J.S. Bach; Haydn and W.A. Mozart Masses; Membra Jesu Nostri by Dietrich Buxtehude; Requiem" by Cherubini; Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi; Cantatas and Psalms by Felix Mendelssohn; Stabat Mater by Josef Rheinberger... From the choral repertoire he has prepared and conducted works by: Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann, Strauss, Béla Bartók, Monteverdi, Whitacre, Busto, Rossini, Arvo Pärt, Kreek, Miskinis, Wolf, Francis Poulenc, Debussy, Edward Elgar, F. Mendelssohn, Max Reger, Cavalli, Grandi, Deering, Purcell, Lorenzani, Samuel Scheidt, Andreas Hammerschmidt, H. Schütz, Bardos, Mompou, Ligeti, Janacek, Mocnik, Schubert, Knut Nystedt, Goreki, Zoltán Kodály, Büsser, Martini, Eberlin, Antonio Lotti, Jan Dismas Zelenka... From the Balearic area he has directed and premiered works by: A. Roig, Prohens, Carbonell, Artigues, D'Aguiló, Joan Serra. In the orchestral repertoire he has conducted, among others, works by Benjamin Britten, Igor Stravinsky, Schubert, L.v. Beethoven, W.A. Mozart, Haydn, Tchaikovsky, Rossini, E. Elgar, Sibelius, Borodin, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Grieg, Gustav Holst, Georges Bizet, Massenet, Dvorak, Paul Hindemith , B. Bartók, Genzmer...

Carles Ponseti Verdaguer has collaborated with different orchestral formations such as the Orquestra Simfònica de Balears, Radio Television Orchestra of Bulgaria, New American Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Sta. Maria de Lucerna, Orquestra de Cambra “Illa de Mallorca”, Jove Orquestra Internacional, Orcheste de Chambre Lyonaise, Camerata sa nostra, Orquestres dels conservatoris Professional i Superior de Balears... and in the area of Early Music, Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla, Compostela Chapel, Ensemble Baroque de Paris, Al Ayre Español, among others.

In the field of education, Carles Ponseti Verdaguer has been a choir and chamber music teacher at the Conservatori Professional de Música i Dansa de Mallorca for more than 20 years. As a teacher he has participated in several courses in the Illes Balears and the Peninsula. Currently, he is part of the management and coordination team of the Universitat de les Illes Balears' own title of University Specialist in Choral Conducting, together with UIB Pfessors Irina Capriles and Llorenç Gelabert Gual.

In the field of composition, he has made some recorded works on CD ("Sons de les illes") and DVD ("Mirages").

In 1991, he received the "Humanities" award given annually by the Rotary club.
