The tenor Stephen Ng was born and raised in Hong Kong. He received his Master of Music at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, and his Doctor of Music at Indiana University. His teachers have included Mollie Rich, Alan Bennett, Susan Clickner, Irene Gubrud, and Raymond Fu.
Stephen Ng is known as an opera, oratorio, recital, and new music performer. On the operatic stage, he was featured in 1999 as the tenor soloist with De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, in nine performances of the staged version of Igor Stravinsky's Threni, in which the renowned Peter Sellars was the director. He has appeared at Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, the Cultural Centre and City Hall in Hong Kong, and on the recital series of St. John’s Cathedral, Hong Kong.
As a tenor soloist, Stephen Ng has performed the role of the Evangelist in J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), and has sung the St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244), St. John Passion (BWV 245), B-minor Mass (BWV 232), Magnificat (BWV 243), J.S. Bach's cantatas, George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, W.A. Mozart’s Requiem, and Arvo Pärt’s Miserere, as well as many major oratorios. His portrayal of the role of Evangelist in Bach’s Passions has received much acclaim. He has performed with major early music groups such as the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Seattle Baroque Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Carmel Bach Festival, Amherst Early Music Festival, Bach Choir of Bethlehem, and Atlanta Baroque Orchestra. His professional engagements also include performing with Festival Internacional Cervantino (Guanajuato, Mexico), Theatre of Voices, Schönberg Ensemble (Amsterdam), Tanglewood Music Festival, Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and Hong Kong Bach Choir, working with conductors such as James Levine, Nicholas McGegan, Paul Hillier, Reinbert de Leeuw, Daniel Reuss, Anthony Hose, and Gennady Rozhdestvensky.
Engagements in recent years include Charpentier's Circé and Le fous divertissant with Magnificat (San Francisco), a lecture/recital on Janácek's The Diary of the One who Vanished, Felix Mendelssohn's Lobgesang with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, and Benjamin Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings with Stetson University. His interest in contemporary music is further shown in his performance of Mario Lavista's Missa ad Consolationis Dominam Nostram at the Festival Internacional Cervantino in Guanajuato, Mexico. With great interest in contemporary music, he was invited to perform in the Lucerne Festival Academy 2006, under the direction of Pierre Boulez. As a 2007 Vocal Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center, Stephen worked with James Levine and Phyllis Curtin.
Stephen Ng is Associate Professor of Voice at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. He has become a permanent resident of USA since 2005.
Stephen Ng's voice can be heard in Carols Vol. 2 and Arvo Pärt: I am the true vine with Harmonia Mundi USA, and the Jubilate Deo with the Christian Communications Ltd. (Hong Kong). His recording of Janáček’s The Diary of One Who Vanished was recently released by Clear Note Publications. |
