The English choral conductor and organist, Andrew Nethsingha, received his early musical training as a chorister in Exeter Cathedral, where his father, a pupil of Herbert Howells, was organist for more than 25 years. His education continued at Clifton College, the Royal College of Music, where he won seven prizes, and Cambridge University . He held Organ scholarships at St. George's Chapel, Windsor, under Dr. Christopher Robinson, and at St. John's College, Cambridge under Dr. George Guest. In 1990 he moved to Wells, where he was Assistant to Dr. Anthony Crossland.
In 1994 Andrew Nethsingha began eight years as Master of the Choristers and Organist at Truro Cathedral, becoming the youngest Cathedral Organist in the Country. During this period the reputation of the Truro Cathedral Choir increased considerably. Whilst in Truro he was also Musical Director of the Three Spires Singers and Orchestra. At Truro he also met and married Lucy, and they now have two children, Emily and Peter. In May 2002 he became Director of Music at Gloucester Cathedral, Artistic Director of the Gloucester Three Choirs Festival and Musical Director of Gloucester Choral Society.
Andrew Nethsingha and has conducted many well-known compositions and famous orchestras. He has performed in many European countries and has made five North American tours. He has directed Choral Courses in South Africa and Canada. He recently conducted Messiah in China, played an Organ Recital at Notre-Dame de Paris and conducted the Philharmonia Orchestra in 4 concerts at the Three Choirs Festival.
Engagements this term include organ recitals at Wells Cathedral and King’s College, Cambridge, conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conducting choirs in Kingston, Ontario. 2005 will include a recital at Liverpool Cathedral, his debut with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and conducting Britten’s War Requiem. |
