The Truro Cathedral Choir is well-known for being one of the most dynamic and exciting groups of its type in the UK.
There are six sung services each week in term time, sung by the eighteen boys and twelve men of the choir. The music is carefully integrated with the magnificent liturgy of the cathedral and is wide-ranging. The repertoire encompasses some of the greatest music from the 14th century to the present day, with a particular feature being the diverse and exciting repertoire of settings of the Mass which are sung every feast day and on Sundays.
This is a living tradition which is continually developing and new works are regularly commissioned and performed with each month’s selection of music including music by living composers. Distinguished Cornish composers Paul Comeau and Russell Pascoe have written works for the choir, as have David Briggs and Gabriel Jackson. Jackson’s brilliant new setting of the Mass, Missa Triueriensis was written specially for the choir.
The famous Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, broadcast live each year from King’s College, Cambridge, started off in Truro Cathedral where it is still sung each year on Christmas Eve and the night before. In recent years, in keeping with the choir’s ethos of maintaining a living tradition, a new carol has been sung at the Festival. |
