Born: January 31, 1943 - Dresden (according to Seeger's Opernlexikon) or Chemnitz (according to the booklet Gesangssolisten der Deutschen Staatsoper Berlin), Saxony, Germany

The German tenor and Kammersännnger, Peter Menzel, studied singing with Helga Fischer-Klotz at the Dresdner Musikhochschule "Carl Maria von Weber", which he attended since 1963.

From 1972 to 1977 he sang at the Landesbühne Sachsen (Dresden-Radebeul), where he was able to sing larger roles like Tamino in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. In 1977, he moved to the Berliner Staatsoper Unter den Linden, of which he was a member until his retirement in 2009. He sang in this opera house in 1977 in the world premiere of Friedrich Goldmann's R. Hot (in the title role, his inaugural role), and in 1979 in the world premiere of Paul Dessau’s Leonce und Lena (as Valerio). The focus of his repertoire were buffo and character roles such as Monostatos in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Oronte in George Frideric Handel's Alcina, Jacquino in L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio, Mime in R. Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen (1996 Staatsoper Berlin), Hexe (the witch) in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel, Brighella in R. Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos, Hauptmann in Alban Berg's Wozzeck by, 1st Strolch in C. Orff's Die Kluge, Monsieur Taupe in R. Strauss's Capriccio, Don Amsel in Udo Zimmermann's Die wundersame Schustersfrau, Flipke in Schreker's Schmied von Gent, the four servant roles in Hoffmanns Erzählungen, Beppo in Auber's Fra Diavolo, Bardolph in Verdi’s Falstaff, Pang in Puccini's Turandot, Mr. Triquet im Eugen Onegin and Jarischkin in Dmitri Shostakovich's The Nose, and the tenor solo in C. Orff's Carmina Burana. Among other things, he made guest appearances as sergeant in Die Nase at the Semperoper Dresden and sang Monostatos in Japan during guest performances at his parent company.

Peter Menzel has also performed successfully as a concert and oratorio singer and participated in tours of the Thomanerchor Leipzig to Japan, Italy and Switzerland.
