Dominick Matsko (Baritone)

Born: Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, USA

The American lyric baritone, Dominick Joseph (DJ) Matsko, holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from West Chester University of Pennsylvania, where he studied with tenor Dr. Stephen Ng and soprano Dr. Anne Gross. He gained his choral knowledge and experience from Dr. David DeVenney, with whom he studied conducting and choral literature.

In 2010, Dominick Matsko revived the role of Ruggiero in West Chester University Opera’s rare production of La Liberazione di Ruggiero dall’isola d’Alcina, an early Baroque opera written by Francesca Caccini, accompanied by a period chamber ensemble. In preparation, he coached with soprano Julianne Baird and counter-tenor Drew Minter on early Baroque vocal technique. In 2013, he performed the role of Figaro in W.A. Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro with West Chester University Opera and Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Dr. DeVenney. In addition to his choral and solo singing experience, Dominick also served as piano accompanist for several fellow vocalists and choral ensembles during his time at West Chester University, having studied piano with Dr. Igor Resnianski.

Dominick Matsko graduated from the vocal performance program at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts under the instruction of baritone Jerrold Pope. In addition to his private studies, he has coached with Peter Sykes and Martin Pearlman as a singer in the Baroque Chamber Ensemble and with Michael Beattie on oratorio repertoire. He served as the baritone choral scholar of the Marsh Chapel Choir (Director: Scott Allen Jarrett) at Marsh Chapel of Boston University from 2013 to 2016. In 2014, he performed as one of the soloists with Music at Marsh Chapel’s performance of J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) both at Marsh Chapel and at Trinity Church on Wall Street in Manhattan. He also traveled with members of the Marsh Chapel Choir to San Diego, California to perform with Bach Collegium San Diego (Director: Ruben Valenzuela) in November 2014. During the 2014 American Guild of Organists Conference in Boston, he performed in several concerts, including Canto Armonico’s Praetorius Organvespers for Pentecost at First Lutheran Church. DJ has sung with several other Boston area ensembles including Boston Baroque (Director: Martin Pearlman), Genesis Chamber Singers, Cappella Clausura, and the Newton Community Chorus.

Working as a voice teacher and conductor, Dominick Matsko served as vocal coach and orchestra conductor for the summer 2014 production of Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story for Front and Centre Productions, Inc. in central Pennsylvania. He currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.
