The Swiss tenor, Jan-Martin Mächler, studied for primary teacher at the Staatlichen Seminar in Thun First Jazz, Pop, improvisation (with his band) and compositionl; then flute, piano and singing lessons. As a flutist he played with the Jugendsymphonieorchester Arabesque I music schools in Münsingen und Thun. He received his first singing lessons at Musikschule Münsingen with Anna Nemes; then studied singing from 1995 to 2000 with Elisabeth Glauser at the Hochschule für Musik in Bern (teacher diploma). Today he studies privately with Nicolai Gedda. He also attended master-classes, in particular Christoph Gaugler and Peter Leu.
Jan-Martin Mächler has been involved in Europe and the USA in many oratorios, such as the Evangelist in Johannes-Passion (BWV 245), Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) and Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) by J.S. Bach, in works by George Frideric Handel, such as Messiah, Esther, Israel in Egypt, in works by Felix Mendelssohn such as Lobgesangs-Symphonie and Elias (including at the Herkules-Saal in Munich, with Bernd Weikl), as is the tenor part inParadies und die Peri by Robert Schumann in his repertoire. One of his favourite oratorio as Golgotha by Frank Martin.
Jan-Martin Mächler has performed with the Jungen Münchner Philharmonie, the Münchner Symphoniker, with the Berner Kantorei and Zürcher Kantorei, the Berner Bach-Chor, Orpheus-Chor dem Cäcilienverein Thun and the Berner Symphonieorchester. He has appeared at the Expo in Hannover 2000, on the Festival di Barocco di Viterbo (Rome), at the Festival für Neue Musik in Frankfurt and at the Festival "Freude herrscht nicht" in Sofia and at the Martinu-Festival in Basel, as well as at the Festival du Lied in Fribourg and in the Cathedral of Malaga (Spain). As a Lieder singer he was inter alia with the Schönen Müllerin. He has co-operated with renowned conductors such as Howard Griffiths, Alberto Zedda, Gennady Rozhdestvensky or Miguel Gomez-Martinez. Operas: Basilio in Le Nozze di Figaro by W.A. Mozart in Fribourg 1997, 3rd Boy in Der Mond by Carl Orff in Munich 1998 and 1999, 2001 (Director: Hellmuth Matiasek), Bastien in Bastien und Bastienne by W.A. Mozart in Wain (USA) 1999. In the summer of 2000/2001/2002/2003/2004 Welscher Spielmann, 1st Hexe and tenor solo in die Bernauerin by Carl Orff also in Munich (Director: Hellmuth Matiasek). In the 2001-2002-2003 seasons he was a member of the soloist ensemble at the Stadttheater Bern, where he appeared as Ivanov in Zar und Zimmermann by Lortzing and Jan in the Bettelstudent by Millöcker. In the 2003-2004 season he appeared as as a freelance singer, and sang Carmina Burana by Carl Orff in Munich, at the Stadttheater Bern, he took part in the premiere of Christian Henking’s opera Leonce und Lena as Valerio, in Tannhauser by Wagner as Heinrich, in Boccaccio by Suppé den Pietro. Appearances on the radio (DRS 1 and 2, Radio BEO, Espace 2 and others, and television TSR, Sat1, BR, ARD, etc.) at home and abroad. In the 2004-2005 season, Jan-Martin Mächler worked, among other things, as Bruno in Puritani at the Stadttheater Bern, and as Faust in Faust by Berlioz with the Berner Bach-Chor. He also performed the role of Alfred in Die Fledermaus at the Casino in Lucerne. In summer 2006 he appeared as the Emperor Franz-Josef in Elizabeth, in the summer of 2007 as Enjolras and Marius in Les Miserables at the Thuner Seebühne. As Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail by W.A. Mozart at the Neuen Theater Dornach. For some time he studied at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis Baroque music with a great joy. Ahe received awards of the Friedl-Wald-Stiftung and the Bürgi-Willert-Stiftung. Additional teaching experience, inter alia with Jan-Hendrik Rootering, Hans Peter Blochwitz, Ion Buzea. Since 2008 he has also lectured at the Swiss Musical Academy.
Composition: First experience in composition and with his band, and later was held the very first world premiere, a sonata for flute and piano in a concert of the Seminars Thun. At the Conservatory, he composed music for various occasions, e.g. for the "2. Forum Schweizer Komponisten des 20.Jh”. His first major project is a CD-Project that deals with poems by Hermann Hesse.
