Leids Projectkoor (Choir)

Founded: 1991 - Leiden, South Holland, the Netherlands

The Leids Projectkoor stands for diversity and quality. Every year, the choir presents varied programmes with often unknown but beautiful choral music. Due to the project-based approach, the size and composition of the choir are flexible, which means that the choice of choral works to be performed is virtually unlimited. For example, since its foundation in 1991, the Leids Projectkoor has sung medieval and Renaissance music in small ensembles, performed romantic and Baroque music as a chamber choir, and performed J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245, Francis Poulenc's Mass in G and other major choral works with over forty singers.

In its choice of repertoire, the Leids Projectkoor is always looking for music and composers that have almost been forgotten or have yet to be discovered. The Dane Alfred Koerppen and the Italian composers Bruno Bettinelli and Mauro Zuccante are good examples of this. In addition, various commissioned compositions have been performed by Adrian Rodriguez van der Spoel and Daan Verlaan, among others. With its special programming, the choir knows how to surprise both its own singers and the audience. Radio 4 has broadcast several concerts by the Leids Projectkoor.

Despite the versatility of the repertoire and the changing composition, the Leids Projectkoor has developed its own, recognizable sound over the past 30 years. The singers of the Leids Projectkoor are advanced amateurs with extensive choir experience. They come from (chamber) choirs in the Leiden region, Utrecht, The Hague, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. In addition to singing in choirs, they often take solo singing lessons. The current directors of the Leids Projectkoor are Johannes Gierl and Dennis Broeders (since June 2019).
