August Langenbeck (Choral Conductor)

Born: January 4, 1912 - Wuppertal, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Died: April 26, 1981 - Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

The German choral conductor, August Langenbeck, studied with Karl Straube and Clemens Krauss.

In 1934, August Langenbeck became Kantor of the Lukaskirche in Stuttgart. Just one year later (1935) he founded the Stuttgarter Kantatenchor, and - together with the Stiftskirche organist Arnold Strebel, who was also a professor at the Musikhochschule, with Professor. Hermann Keller and regional church musicician Wilhelm Gohl - by Leipzig model as a precursor of the hour of church music in Stuttgart, carried out since 1939 in the Stiftskirche, as »kirchenmusikalisch-liturgische Wochenschlußfeier« (church music-liturgical week closing ceremony) planned and designed series of events on Saturday afternoon from 16:00 to 16:40. August Langenbeck served as Kantor of the Paulus-Chor Stuttgart from 1937 to 1958.

Despite laying, heating problems and other consequences of the war, the weekly ceremony could be carried out until the spring of 1944 in the Stiftskirche, and after August Langenbeck returning from captivity, was resumed, first at the Schloss; then from 1950 until the inauguration of the rebuilt Stiftskirche in celebration service on June 1, 1958, at the Markuskirche, where Karl Gerok worked as organist. Together with him August Langenbeck now performed the service at the Stiftskirche. Based on experience, however, the Stiftskirche Kantor chose a weekday instead of Saturday (originally the Thursday was aimed, not Friday), a later onset and a longer duration (about 1 hour), not only liturgical literature, but also more extensive works could be performed. The title "hour of sacred music" was borrowed by August Langenbeck from Hamburg St. Petri-Kirche.Its first hour was on June 6, 1958 and to the last on April 24, 1981. From 1951 to 1977, Langenbeck was also also consultant for sacred and choral music for the Southern German Radio (SDR).
