Wolfgang Lange (Conductor)

Born: The Netherlands

The Dutch conductor, Wolfgang Lange, studied oboe with Han de Vries (Amsterdam), Gerhard Turetschek (Vienna, cum laude) and Christian Schneider (Cologne, 'Konzertfach). He studied singing with Ronald Klekamp, Robert Luts and Xenia Meijer, among others. He studied choral conducting with Barend Schuurman at the Hogeschool voor Muziek te Rotterdam and continued his training at the Hogeschool voor Muziek in Tilburg for 'Second Phase'. In 2003 he obtained his Master's Degree. He studied conducting with Julius Kalmar at the Hans Swarowsky Institute in Milan. He took private lessons and was an intern with a.o. Timo Nuoranne, conductor of the Finnish Radio Chamber Choir. He also had internship with Winchester Cathedral Choir under David Hill.

Wolfgang Lange was a freelance oboist in various orchestras. As project singer he was attached to the professional chamber choir Studium Chorale and the Bach-Academie initiated by Philippe Herreweghe. He was also a chopir member of Bachkoor Holland and Oude Muziek Koor (Arnhem).

In 1991, Wolfgang Lange co-founded his own orchestra - the Helios Ensemble, of which he is is conductor and artistic director as well as and resident oboist. He is also director of the Helios Kamerkoor. With these ensembles he realized several productions and CD recordings. In January 2007 he performed with Helios Ensemble the world premiere of Als je weet waar ik ben zoek me dan ("If you know what I'm looking for me") by Gabor Tarjan and Daan Manneke's Cantique de Pascal in a new version, Double, instrumented by Bart Visman. Manneke composed for Helios Ensemble Trajectoire, a grand motet for chorus and ensemble.

Wolfgang Lange is permanent conductor of several chamber choirs: the Gelders Bach Collegium (Apeldoorn, since 2008), Utrechts Kamerkoor, Achterhoeks Bachkoor (since 2013), Kleinkoor Caprice (since 2010) and Luna Kamerkoor (project choir, since 2005). With his choirs he conducts diverse choral repertoire of music from the past five centuries, both a cappella and with full orchestra.

Wolfgang Lange loves J.S. Bach, English choral music and innovations. He loves to go on the choir trip and packed with ideas. A very versatile man, Wolfgang Lange played as oboist several times Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) by J.S. Bach; as a singer, he sang Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) and as conductor he directed Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) for the first time in 2012.
