Javier Ulises Illán (Conductor)

Born: 1981 - Toledo, Spain

The Spanish violinist, conductor, musicologist and music teacher, Javier Ulises Illán Ortiz, has a Higher Degree in Violin from Musikene (Centro Superior de Música del País Vasco in San Sebastian) and a Bachelor's degree in Music History and Sciences from the la Universidad de La Rioja. He is an expert in interpretation and analysis from the Universidad de Oviedo. He completed his Master of Arts degree in Orchestral and Opera Conducting from the Hochschule Luzern Musik with top grades under Howard Arman (2012-2015). Howard Arman enabled him to assist in the operas Carmen and Cantos de Sirena at the Luzerner Theater in spring 2015. In January 2016, he made his debut as a guest conductor with the Spanischen National Orchester ONE at the National Auditorium of Music in Madrid. He has trained in orchestral conducting in Spain, Austria, France and Switzerland with prestigious conductors: Howard Arman, Ton Koopman, Philippe Herreweghe, George Pehlivanian, Jörg Bierhance, Salvador Mas-Conde, Jorma Panula, Manfred Huss (historicist music) and Julius Kalmar (opera). He has received guidance from directors and pedagogues Pierre Boulez and Bernard Haitink.

Javier Ulises Illán is an orchestra conductor with the ability to approach, with excellence, musical repertoires from the Baroque period to Contemporary Music, both the symphonic and lyrical genres. In his intense career he has conducted, among many other ensembles, the Haydn Sinfonietta Wien (Austria), Lucerne Strings Festival (Switzerland), Russian State Academic Symphony Orchestra “Evgeny Svetlanov”, Moscow State Academic Chamber Choir, Accademia Barocca Lucernensis (Switzerland), Orquesta Sinfónica de RTVE, Orquesta de Cámara de España, Joven Orquesta Nacional de España, Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid, Orquesta Lírica Europea, Burgos Baroque Ensemble or Collegium Musicum Madrid. He maintains artistic ties with La Fura dels Baus, exercising musical direction in some projects.

With the Ensemble AvantgarDames Javier Ulises Illán conducted various premieres in Germany and Switzerland, and he conducted concerts with the Haydn Sinfonietta Wien. In 2007, he founded the ensemble Sphera Antiqva. In 2010, he founded Nereydas, an orchestra and choir with which he carries out his musical projects of rescue, historicist interpretation and recording of early music in Spain and Europe, which have earned the greatest recognition. Especially significant are the collaborations with the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical, Festival Internacional de Arte Sacro de Madrid, Versailles Festival or National Heritage, as well as the recordings (some of them first) in Glossa, PanClassics and CMY Baroque: Angélico Greco. The sky was filled with music, The Jommelli Album, Siface: l’amor castrato y The Royal Chapel of Madrid. Sacred Music after the Great Fire of 1734. In autumn 2016, with his orchestra Nereydas, he released a CD with previously unknown opera arias by Niccolò Jommelli on the record label Pan Classics. The two ensembles give successful concerts in various cities in Spain, including on stages such as the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid

As chief conductor of Accademia Barocca Lucernensis Barockorchester & Vokalensemble, founded by Javier Ulises Illán in 2014, he mainly deals with the Central European Baroque repertoire: J.S. Bach, Jan Dismas Zelenka, Johann Adolf Hasse or Dietrich Buxtehude, achieving great success. With the recording of the CD "Zelenka - Hasse: Sacred Music for Dresden Cathedral" he obtained two nominations at the European Opus Klassik 2019 awards, including best musical direction. His performances have been recorded and broadcast by different European stations: BBC, NDR, Rai, RNE, Radio France, SRF. Particular attention has been deserved by J.S. Bach's widely circulated J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245, the last Passion in concert with the public before the 2020 pandemic.

Javier Ulises Illán is a researcher, critical editor of opera music and musicologist specializing in 18th century scores. He is part of the team of the European project DIDONE, led by Álvaro Torrente, at the ICCMU of the Complutense University of Madrid, which explores the musical expression of emotions in 18th century operas, on a corpus of 900 works by 300 composers, based on the 27 librettos by Pietro Metastasio (1698-1782).

Javier Ulises Illán has worked as a violin teacher and orchestra conductor at various conservatories and institutions. He was Professor of Violín at Conservatorio Profesional de Música "Jacinto Guerrero" in Toledo, Spain (September 2017-January 2018). He has been the pedagogical and artistic director of the instrumental and orchestral area of the Aula Social del Teatro Real de Madrid; and has directed and coordinated various social orchestra projects with children, including the Festival Cocreadores de Arte Libre en Madrid.

Javier Ulises Illán regularly collaborates with the media, both general and specialized, in order to bring music closer to people so that they understand and value it. In all the fields in which he works, he does so with the conviction that musical dissemination is a very important task to train individuals, educate people and create society.
