The Indiana University Pro Arte Singers is a chamber chorus that performs medieval, renaissance, and Baroque choral repertoire. In addition to choral concerts, the ensemble performs semi-staged early theatrical works as well as chamber music with voices and instruments.
Previous directors of the Pro Arte Singers include John Poole, director of the BBC Singers from 1972 to 1989, and Paul Hillier, director of the Hilliard Ensemble and Theater of Voices.
The Pro Arte Singers recently performed John Harbison's A Clear Midnight (2009), which was commissioned for them by the Joshi Foundation in memory of Georgina Joshi, and toured with performances of J.S. Bach's B Minor Mass (BWV 232) and the Monteverdi Vespers. In addition to early music, the ensemble regularly ventures into new music and is a major interpreter of the symphonic-choral works of Sven David Sandström.
The Pro Arte Singers often collaborates with the Early Music Institute of Indiana University, combining forces with the large instrumental ensemble Concentus. |
