The German bass, Hans-Olaf Hudemann, was the son of Ernst Hudemann, a well-known concert baritone. When he was ten years old he became member of the Thomanerchor Leipzig. Since 1934 he studied music science at the Universities of Freiburg and Kiel, where it also attained a doctorate. Simultaneously he trained his voice.
In 1943 Hans-Olaf Hudemann began his career as concert and oratorio singer. After World War II, he was brought to Leipzig by the Thomaskantor Günther Ramin. He undertook extended concert tours as soloist with the Thomanerchor Leipzig. He was very successful at Bachfest Leipzig, as well as in concerts in Belgium, Holland, France and in Switzerland. He was praised primarily for his art of the J.S. Bach singing, but he dedicated himself also to contemporary music works.
Since 1961 Hans-Olaf Hudemann was a lecturer at the Musikhochschule of Heidelberg. From 1957 to 1962 he was director of the master-class at the Akademie für Tonkunst in Darmstadt, and since 1972 Professor at the University of Frankfurt a.M.
