The German mezzo-soprano, Marlen Herzog, has already received piano lessons at age 6 and later voice lessons at the Musikschule Meißen. She continued her singing studies at the Hochschule für Musik “Carl Maria von Weber“ in Dresden in the class of Professor Hartmut Zabel, and finished in the summer of 2006 with the soloist recital. She studied in the opera class of Professor Andreas Baumann and appeared in several high school productions (including Johann Adolf Hasse’s La sorella amante in 2002, George Frideric Handel’s Amadigi in 2006).
As a member of the Dresdner Kammerchor under Hans-Christoph Rademann she gained valuable experience, particularly in the area of early music. At the 40th International Antonin Dvorak Competition in Karlsbad (Czech Republic) in November 2005, she received two special awards in the opera category. From 2006 Marlen was Duke for two seasons an ensemble member at the Opernhaus Halle as a scholarship holder of the Jürgen Ponto-Stiftung Frankfurt/M. She sang there roles including Annius in W.A. Mozart's La clemenza di Tito, the 2nd Lady in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, as well as Rheintochter Floßhilde in the concert version of Rheingold by Richard Wagner. expanded her repertoire with Monteverdi's L'Orfeo and smaller roles in G.F. Handel's operas at the Händelfestspiele Halle. Highlight of the time in Halle (Saale) was the part of Hansel in Engelbert Humperdinck's fairy tale opera Hänsel und Gretel.
A guest performance at the Staatsoperette Dresden as 2nd Lady in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, directed by Axel Köhler Marlen Duke led back to Dresden. From here, she now works as a freelance singer and has performed with ensembles such as the Dresdner Kreuzchor, Capella Sagittariana or Lautten Compagney Berlin. She also made guest appearances in leading German festivals, the Bachfest Leipzig and the Internationalen Händel Festspielen Göttingen. She was very successful as a guest at the Markgräflichen Opernhaus in Bayreuth in the opera Argenore from the pen of Markgräfin Wilhelmine von Bayreuth in May 2009. In June 2010, she sang as a guest the role of Timante in the opera Floridante by G.F. Handel at the Händelfestspielen in Halle (Saale). The Richard Wagner Association Dresden recently awarded her the Richard Wagner Scholarship for the year 2012. Currently, she can be heard as as Czipra in Zigeunerbaron by J. Strauss at the Staatsoperette Dresden. |
