The Norwegian hapsichordist and conductor, Ketil Haugsand, started his musical studies in Trondheim and Oslo. Later he pursued his studies in Prague and Haarlem. In 1973 he was awarded the Solo Diploma and in 1975 the prestigious Prix d'Excellence at the Amsterdam Conservatory where he studied under Gustav Leonhardt.
From 1974 until 1994, Ketil Haugsand was full time assistant professor at the Norwegian State Academy of Music in Oslo where he taught harpsichord repertoire, figured bass, pianoforte, early organ repertoire and coached baroque and classical ensemble on early instruments. Since 1994 he teaches at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, where he is a highly sought professor of harpsichord. He is regularly invited to teach in the International Summer Courses for Early Music in Trondheim, and is a founding member of the Academia de Música Antiga de Lisboa, having led the harpsichord class at its Lisbon and Porto Early Music courses since their inception. He takes part as jury member at international competitions for harpsichord in Leipzig, Warsaw and Prague.
Since his debut in November 1969, Ketil Haugsand has been steadily building his career as a performing artist, both in recital, as soloist with orchestra and in chamber music, and has toured extensively in Europe, Israel and the USA. He has collaborated with artists like Jaap Schröder, Wieland and Barthold Kuijken, Marie Leonhardt and Frans Brüggen. His very well consolidated duo with the american Viola da Gamba player Laurence Dreyfus has won considerable international acclaim, both in concert and on CD, as have his recordings of harpsichord works by L. Marchand and J.S. Bach. His record of Rameau's Pièces de Clavecin en Concert with Catherine Mackintosh and Laurence Dreyfus (Simax) was nominated for the Gramophone award.
Ketil Haugsand is the artistic leader of the Arte Real Ensemble and of the Norwegian Baroque Orchestra. He travelled to Portugal with this orchestra for two concerts at the Coimbra Festival, one of which with music of Carlos Seixas that was later recorded for EMI/Virgin.
Ketil Haugsand has also been an active harpsichord maker and is often consulted with regard to restoring of old instruments or making and design of new ones |
