Benjamin Hartmann (Conductor)

Born: 1990 - Schwäbisch Hall, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

The German conductor, Benjamin Hartmann, received from his early childhood intensive musical training in piano, voice and organ. He passed his Abitur at the Evangelische Seminare Maulbronn und Blaubeuren (2009); obtained his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the Universität Leipzig (2010-2013); and his Bachelor of Music degree in Choral Conducting, Singing and Music Teacher Education degree from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" in Leipzig (2010-2015). In 2010 he became music assistant and choral scholar at Lancing College, UK, performing in a number of England’s main churches such as St Paul’s, Westminster Abbey and St John’s Cambridge. In 2011 he was assistant conductor of the International Chamber Choir of JM Slovenia. After studying choral conducting, singing and music education as a Deutschlandstipendiat at Musikhochschule Leipzig, he was accepted into the choral conducting master programme at Royal Stockholm University of Music (2014-2016) with Fredrik Malmberg and Mats Nilsson. As part of the scholarships from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, he conducted choral studies with the Swedish Radio Choir and Eric Ericsons Kammarkör. He completed Master of Music in Choral Studies at University of Cambridge (2018-2019). He was participant of master-classes with Peter Hanke, Gunnar Eriksson and André de Quadros. Other influential teachers, also in master-classes, were Hans-Christoph Rademann, Helmuth Rilling, Grete Pedersen, Daniel Reuss, Simon Halsey and Peter Dijkstra. He was selected for the 2014 ‘Conducting 21C’ "Musical Leadership for a New Century" program run by the International Eric Ericson Choral Centre and in 2015 participated in the Yale Summer Program of Choral Conducting of Yale University and in the first Tenso Masterclass for Conductors in Mechelen. In 2019 he was accepted as a scholarship holder into the Dirigentenforum des Deutschen Musikrates.

During his studies Benjamin Hartmann took over the direction of the Philharmonischen Jugendchores Leipzig (at the age of 22) and the Kammarkören Musikaliska in Stockholm. Furthermore, there was collaboration with highly distinguished ensembles and choirs such as the Kammerchor Stuttgart (Director: Frieder Bernius), Gaechinger Cantorey (Director: Hans-Christoph Rademann), GewandhausChor Leipzig, Cappella Amsterdam (Director: Daniel Reuss), and Helsinki Chamber Choir, DR Pigekoret, Manado State University Choir, German Youth Chamber Choir, Jena Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, Chamber Choir Josquin des Préz. He also works as an assistant and voice coach at the MDR-Kinderchor.

Benjamin Hartmann has always been very passionate about choral music. Besides his conducting career he enjoys singing in ensembles such as the Kammerchor Stuttgart (Director: Frieder Bernius) and Maulbronner Kammerchor, KMH Kammarkör, GewandhausChor Leipzig, JSB Ensemble, German Youth Chamber Choir, and the World Youth Choir; working with renowned conductors including Helmuth Rilling, Hans-Christoph Rademann, Frieder Bernius, Fredrik Malmberg, Simon Halsey, Nigel Short, Martina Batič, Dennis Russell Davies, and Riccardo Chailly. Concert tours have taken him to many European countries as well as to Thailand, South Africa, and Chile.

In 2015, Benjamin Hartmann founded the Verum Audium-Vokalensemble. He also took over the Artistic Direction of the Maulbronner Kammerchor in 2016 and was Artistic Director of the Knabenchor Collegium Iuvenum Stuttgart from 2020 to March 2022. Hartmann has also been working as an assistant and conductor at the Junge Oper Stuttgart of the Staatsoper Stuttgart since 2016, where he also directed performances. At the Staatsoper he worked as an assistant to the choir director in the production of the world premiere of Erdbeben.Träume (2018). Since 2017 he has been working with the Landesjugendchor and the Landesmusikakademie Rheinland-Pfalz. He has been Artistic Director of the Salzburger Bachchor since March 2022. He is chairman of the artistic advisory board of the VDKC Baden-Württemberg, board member of the AMJ Baden-Württemberg and is involved in the Recruitment Germany of the Weltjugendchor.
