The German baritone, Johannes-Christoph Happel, studied first church music and afterwards singing at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover with Gabriele von Glasow and Theo Altmeyer. With first prizes and scholarships excellently, he had already engagements as a singer on German stages during his studies. After his opera and concert exam, Mario Venzago invited him to the Theatre of the City Heidelberg.
Since 1991 Johannes-Christoph Happel works as free lancer. As a concert singer Johannes-Christoph Happel predominantly concerns himself with the music of the Baroque and works with different renowned ensembles and conductors in this area together. Beside for this period, his repertoire includes the typical bass literature with compositions of the Viennese Classical period, Lieder and oratorios of the Romantic period, as well as contemporary music.
Johannes-Christoph Happel has given concerts in music festivals such as Antwerp, Bonn, Ludwigsburg, Schwetzingen, the Jerusalem Festival, the Wiener Festwochen, Wratislavia Cantans and in the Paris Old Opera, where he has co-operated with distinguished conductors such as Frieder Bernius, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Thomas Hengelbrock, Philippe Herreweghe, Ton Koopman, Sigiswald Kuijken, Gustav Leonhardt and Horst Stein. |
