Enoch zu Guttenberg (Conductor)

The German conductor, Georg Enoch Robert Prosper Philipp Franz Karl Theodor Maria Heinrich Johannes Luitpold Hartmann Gundeloh Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg, studied composition and a directing in Munich and Salzburg. Bernhard Paumgartner and Antal Doráti influenced the young musician considerably. His most important Mentor was the resident of Munich composer, conductor and political essayist Karl von Feilitzsch.

In 1967 Enoch zu Guttenberg created the Choir Community Neubeuern and led it within few years to international acknowledgment. They participated together in numerous festivals, among other things in Schwetzingen, at the Berlin Festival Weeks, the Salzburg Mozart Weeks, the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, the Rheingau Music Festival and the European Weeks Passau. Tours and appearance journeys led them to France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, as well as to Tschechien, Poland, Austria (Viennese Music Association) and South America. They received honors like the Bavarian State Prize, the Ernst Prize of Siemens Donation, the Culture Prize of the Bavarian National Donation and the German Culture Prize.

From 1981 to 1987 Enoch zu Guttenberg, additionally to his work with the Choir Community Neubeuern, led also the Frankfurt Caecilienverein. Guest contracts led him to conduct the Bach Collegium Munich, NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg, Nouvel Orchestre Philharmonique Paris, Bayerisches Staatsorchester of Munich, Deutschen Oper on the Rhine, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, Saarland Radio Orchestra and Stuttgarter Philharmoniker.

In 1997 Enoch zu Guttenberg was joint founder of the Orchestra of the KlangVerwaltung - confine which beginning, most productive co-operation with the target to establish a stylistic oriented orchestra.

After opening of the boundaries Enoch zu Guttenberg already intensifies his since longer existing co-operation with orchestras of the former Eastern Bloc. From 1993 to 1996 he was first a guest conductor of the orchestra Central German Radio Leipzig. Engagements with orchestras like the Sinfonia Varsovia, the Cappella Istropolitana, Slowakischen Philharmonie Bratislava, and many other ensembles followed. For his work he was appointed the honour conductor of the Baltic Philharmonic Concert Hall Gdansk, and also appointed as the first guest conductor of the Philharmonic Concert Hall Brünn.

Apart from his interpretations to symphonic music, Enoch zu Guttenberg appears today as an outstanding interpreter of the large oratorio works from the Baroque and the Romantic eras. His self-willed style connects items of historical performance practice with modern and vital delivery.

Radio and television productions as well as CDs with BMG and Sony document Enoch zu Guttenberg’s musical working. Among other things he appered in 1996 on the occasion of the Bruckner Year in Sony Classical recordings of Bruckner’s Te Deum and Mass in e minor. Since 1997 Enoch zu Guttenberg recorded exclusively with Farao Classics. The results of these was so far Deutsche Requiem by Johannes Brahms and the Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) by J.S. Bach.

Additionally to the music the political commitment in Enoch zu Guttenberg’s family is a traditional obligation - his father, Karl Theodor zu Guttenberg, was an important parliamement member and under-secretary of state. Beyond his artistic work he is well-known as active advocate of an ecologically oriented policy. As a joint founder of the Artists United for Nature, he places his concerts to BUND (Federation for environmental and nature protection Germany) and also serves often the International Environment Organization. In 1991 he became for his earnings/services around music and environmental protection with the Order of Merit 1st Class excellently. The 1997 ZDF broadcast television document "directing against the fall" is a certification of his impressive commitment.
