Alfred Gross (Harpsichord, Clavichord)

Born: Germany

The German harpsichordist, fortepianist and clavichordist, Alfred Gross, has a wide repertoire, from the Renaissance to Viennese classical period around 1800. Due to his extensive studies of keyboard instruments, he believes that the techniques of the keyboard instruments formed an important component of the beginning of their interpretation, and he would like to restore the connection of composition and instrument of the appropriate time.

Apart from an expanded soloist and chamber music concert activity, Alfred Gross is invited regularly to broadcast and CD productions. He gives courses and lectures on restoring and handling of historical instruments and their interpretation, and operates as advisor for general music studies at the University of Tübingen and as a director of the harpsichord class at the Hochschule für Kirchenmusik in Tübingen. Due to his special affinity for the clavichord, he created in 1993 the Deutschen Clavichord Societät (DCS), and since then has operated as its president. Concerts tours led him in the past years to numerous European countries, including solo recitals at the Belgian Festival for Historical Keyboard Instruments‚ "Antverpiano" and the Geneva Harpsichord Festival 1995, in addition to invitations to give concerts on important original instruments in museums such as Stuttgart, Hamburg, Munich, Berlin and Leipzig.
