The English soprano, Julia Gooding, studied at the Guidhall School of Music and Drama with Johanna Peters.
Julia Gooding is an established concert and oratorio performer throughout the UK and abroad. She is particularly renowned for her interpretation of Baroque music and enjoys a career worldwide combining both concert and staged performances with recordings. She has collaborated with many specialist conductors including Trevor Pinnock, Nicholas McGegan, Marc Minkowski, Philippe Herreweghe and Franz Brüggen.
Julia Gooding's operatic appearances have included Salome in Sradella's San Giovanni Battista at the Innsbruck Festival, Romilda in George Frideric Handel's Xerxes in Halle, Minerve, Amore and Giunone in Monteverdi's Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria in a joint production with La Monnaie and the Kunsten Festival des Arts in Amsterdam, Dido in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas at the Cervantes Festival in Mexico and the title role in Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea with the Purcell Quartet in Japan.
As a concert artist, Julia Gooding has sung Purcell with Jean-Claude Malgoire, W.A. Mozart's Coronation Mass with Trevor Pinnock, Boccherini's Stabat Mater with the Orchestra of the Age of Englightenment, Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass with Frans Brüggen and with Charles Mackerras, J.S. Bach's B-Minor Mass (BWV 232) with Christopher Hogwood, Scarlatti cantatas with Gerard Lesne, and a number of G.F. Handel's oratorios with conductors such as Richard Hickox, Paul McCreesh, Nicholas McGegan and Marcus Creed. She has appeared in one-voice-per-part performances of J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243), Easter Oratorio (BWV 249) and St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with Paul McCreesh. Recent concert engagements include Georg Philipp Telemann’s Der Tod Jesus and Haydn’s Stabat Mater with the Dutch Radio Chamber Orchestra and Frans Brüggen, a BBC Prom performance of G.F. Handel’s Dixit Dominus with The English Concert and Andrew Manze and G.F. Handel’s Messiah in Spain and Holland with The Academy of Ancient Music led by Paul Goodwin. In June 2005 she participated in performances of J.S. Bach’s Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) with the New London Consort conducted by Philip Pickett at the Israel Festival Jerusalem.
Julia Gooding's recordings include G.F. Handel's Teseo with Les Musiciens du Louvre, Purcell's Odes for Queen Mary with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Monteverdi's Orfeo and Antonio Vivaldi's Dixit Dominus with the New London Consort, Linley and Boyce cantatas with the Parley of Instruments, Taverner's Sappho with the Academy of Ancient Music and many others. Most recent additions to a discography of more than twenty recordings are J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243) and St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) for DG with the Gabrieli Consort under the baton of Paul McCreesh. |
