EOS Música Antiga USP (Early Music Instrumental Ensemble)

Founded: 2001 - São Paulo, Brazil

EOS Música Antiga USP is made up of undergraduate, graduate and extension students and professors from the Department of Music, in a democratic environment of musical exchange and mutual learning. In its 20th year of activity, the group has aligned itself with national and international performers who share the proposal of uniting musical theory and practice. The public will be able to appreciate this rich partnership, getting to know the work being carried out by the new generation of musicians from the Department of Music at ECA-USP. The instruments used are copies of the instruments used at the time the songs presented were composed (17th century).

The Conjunto de Música Antiga da ECA-USP (ECA-USP Ancient Music Ensemble) was created in 2001, the first of its kind in a Brazilian university. It focuses on the repertoire of the 17th to 18th centuries and uses instruments of the time, such as recorder, traverso, chalumeau, Baroque bassoon, violin, viola, cello and Baroque double bass, viola da gamba, harpsichord, harp, lute, theorbo and Baroque guitar. The group brings together undergraduate, graduate and cultural extension students, professors from the Department of Music at ECA and invited professionals, in an enriching environment for exchanging experiences. Since its creation, it has carried out several projects involving the repertoire of the 16th to the 18th century, including two complete scenic productions: the opera L'Orfeo, by Claudio Monteverdi (Theatro São Pedro, SP, 2005) and the Divertissement Les Arts Réunis, by Jean-Baptiste Lully (Theatro Polytheama, Jundiaí and Sala Olido , SP, 2011, in partnership with Mercurius Company, London).

The Ensemble has carried out joint projects with performers and institutions that have recognized work in early music. This exchange has been fundamental for the musical growth of the group, for the maturation of individual research, for dialogue and learning, for cultural and human enrichment and for placing Brazil on the international map of musical interpretation and research.

Among the musicians who have already carried out projects with the group are the Brazilian Ricardo Barros (University of Hull, England), the English Mary Collins (Royal Academy of Music, London) and the German Christian Beuse (Universität der Künste, Berlin), among others. In 2012, the guest of the Ensemble was the violinist Judy Tarling, one of the most respected specialists in Baroque music in England. With two books published, he has a work aimed not only at musicians, but at early music listeners in general.

As it is linked to the university, the Ensemble has a specific proposal, which combines teaching, research and high quality musical interpretation. Its participants not only master the technique of ancient instruments, but actively work with various aspects of research, translating and studying treatises, editing scores, researching the instruments of the time, and, finally, transforming all this knowledge into intelligent musical practice. Among the research carried out within the Ensemble, there are already three translations of 17th-century musical treatises, works on history or interpretation on ancient instruments, research on reception, musical style and taste, musical rhetoric, etc.

The group's musical activities have had excellent repercussions, and the proposal to hold didactic concerts is an effective action in the sense of taking the research that underlies this practice outside the university walls. Its members are convinced that it is possible to show, in a simple and accessible way, that these surveys are not hermetic speculations - on the contrary, they are powerful means to enrich the perceptive diagram of musicians and listeners.

Historically Informed Parctice, also known as early music, has been gaining ground on the world stage, not only for establishing an alternative to traditional musical practice, with a romantic approach, but also for offering an incursion into repertoires not traditionally explored by orchestras and ensembles that do not use historical instruments. Therefore, it is important that Brazilian educational institutions are aligned with world trends, offering their students the opportunity to get in touch with this musical approach. EOS Música Antiga USP is one of the only early music groups linked to a Brazilian university, and has an objective that differentiates it from most musical groups, which is to bring together research work and musical practice.
