Patrick Debrabandere (Tenor, Choral Conductor)

Born: Gent, Belgium

The Belgian tenor, choral conductor and music teacher, Patrick Debrabandere, received piano and organ lessons at the music academy of community education in Ghent. He obtained his Master in Music degree in Music Pedagogy from the Lemmens Institute in Leuven (1994-1999) and his Master in Music degree in Choral Conducting with Erik Van Nevel from the same insitute (1994-2001).

Patrick Debrabandere is tenor and followed singing classes with Jan Caals. Until 2009 he was a permanent member of the vocal ensemble Currende and the Currende Consort. As a vocal soloist, he prefers to bring Baroque repertoire in the form of a narrator, a role in which he distinguishes himself, as in J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245 and Matthäus-Passion BWV 244. His rhetorical storytelling power is an essential characteristic of vocal and interpretative expression.

Patrick Debrabandere is regularly requested as guest conductor with various ensembles. He also frequently contributes to the quality guidance for choirs via the Flemish Federation for Young Choirs (Vlaamse Federatie voor Jonge Koren, Koor and Stem, Gent). As a teacher, he is affiliated since August 2001 with the Academy for Music, Drama and Dance, Community Education in Ghent (Academie voor Muziek, Woord en Dans van het Gemeenschapsonderwijs). There too vocal and choral events are very important to him, which resulted in the establishment of concert choir Vox Mago in September 2004.

As a 10-year-old, Patrick Debrabandere acquired his first choir experience with Schola Cantorum of the Sint-Baafs Cathedral in Ghent. His enthusiasm for choral music subsequently resulted in the birth of the Ensemble Soratea in September 1993. Kunststudio Living Art is his personal sound laboratory in which he wants to bring his musical interpretation in a professional and innovative way. This has already resulted in a number of CD recordings. His search for unknown repertoire and the concern for a dynamic and refreshing approach to music are constant values in his career.

Because he strongly believes in direct communication between making and receiving sound, the desire had grown to create a space in which chamber music can reflect its real character. In this project, there is room for small-scale concerts where the contact between performer and audience is minimal and vibrations are literally observed. Kunststudio Living Art came into life in March 2016. Concerts are not a final stage but offer a further growth opportunity for the performers by distributing these concerts on social media and BravaTv! He currently lives in Oostakker, near Gent, Belgium.
