Tomás Cotic (Violin)

Born: Buenos Aires, Argentina

The Argetinean violinist, Tomás Cotic, obtained his Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Teaching and Master of Music degrees from the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Freiburg im Breisgau (1997-2003); and his Artist Diploma in Violn from Glenn Gould School from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada (2003-2005). He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Violin Performance from the University of Miami (2010-2013) and completed his doctoral research on the interpretation of Schubert's violin and piano music. He studied with Nicolás Chumachenco and Lorand Fenyves. He also worked closely with members of the Vermeer, Tokyo and Endellion String Quartets, as well as notable artists, including Midori, Christian Tetzlaff, Ana Chumachenko Heinz Holliger, Leon Fleisher and the leaders of Wiener Philharmoniker, Berliner Philharmoniker, New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, and San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. He was a first-prize winner at the National Broadcast Music Competition in his native Argentina in 1997, as well as the winner of the Government of Canada Award for 2003-2005.

Tomás Cotic performed as a soloist in Buenos Aires, Amarillo, Miami and Toronto, performing the J.S. Bach, Haydn, Antonio Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky and Bruch Violin Concertos, the Schubert Rondo for violin and strings and A. Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. He was a rotating concert-master with the New World Symphony, principal second violin of the Florida Grand Opera (August 2010-2015) and the Palm Beach Symphony (August 2013-2015), as well as the concert-master of the Amarillo Symphony, with which he also appeared as a soloist. Following an international audition in New York, he was invited to perform as concert-master of Minas Gerais Philarmonic in Brazil under Fabio Mechetti. He was also runner-up for the concert-master position at the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Colon Theater in Buenos Aires and a finalist for the Orlando Philharmonic concert-master position. He has performed with several internationally prominent conductors such as Michael Tilson Thomas, Valery Gergiev, Roberto Abbado, Yakov Kreizberg, Marin Alsop, Stephan Deneve, Roger Norrington and Robert Spano in significant venues including Carnegie Hall.

Tomás Cotic has been invited to join the acclaimed Amernet String Quartet in residence at Florida International University (2015-2016). Previously he was a member for five seasons of the Delray String Quartet (August 2010-2015), with whom he commissioned, premiered and recorded works by Richard Danielpour and Kenneth Fuchs in 3 albums for Naxos produced by Judith Sherman. He was also the first violinist of the Harrington String Quartet (2007-2009), with which he recorded the Felix Mendelssohn viola Quintets with renowned violist James Dunham in an album produced by Blanton Alspaugh and engineered by John. Further chamber music collaborations include members from the Cleveland, Miami, Pro Arte and Vogler String Quartets, among others. He has played recitals in Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Spain, Canada, Argentina, Japan and throughout the USA, participating in more than 15 international music festivals and creating collaborative projects with artists from various fields. He has played in duo with the pianist Tao Lin since 2011. Other chamber music partners include: Joseph Kalichstein, Franklin Cohen, among others.

In the 2015-2016 season the Amernet String Quartet appeared at New York’s Merkin Hall, at Music Mountain Festival in Connecticut, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, as well as in concerts in Detroit, Dallas, Miami, Canada, Taiwan and Israel. The Cotik/Lin Duo was just selected as the only Duo on the roster of Live on Stage and will tour extensively throughout the USA in the coming seasons. Last season they performed in Illinois, Colorado, New York (Bargemusic), Florida (Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center), Texas, North Carolina (Fletcher Opera Theatre) and California (Occidental Center for the Arts).

Pop music collaborations include recordings with Natalie Cole, Gloria Estefan, Barry Gibb, George Benson and Alejandro Sanz as well as performances with Smokey Robinson, Donna Summer, Bobby McFerrin, Chick Corea, Dave Grusin, Franck Sinatra Jr and Take 6 among others.

An avid recording artist, Tomás Cotic is currently involved in more than a dozen CD recordings, which received the highe st praise from some of the best known publications such as Fanfare, American Record Guide, Downbeat, and MusicWeb International. His debut album with Tao Lin, the first volume of the complete works of Franz Schubert for violin and piano, was released in 2012 on Centaur Records and received numerous rave reviews in the international press, including one in Fanfare Magazine that compared their CD favorably with the classic recording by Sergei Rachmaninov and Kreisler. This recording was also nominated as “Recording of the Year” 2013 by MusicWeb International and was broadcast nationwide by American Public Media. In 2013, Naxos released the duo’s album "Tango Nuevo" with music by Astor Piazzolla for violin and piano, described by different critics as "among the very best" Piazzolla albums, “by some distance, Naxos's best Piazzolla recordings,” as well as “exceptional... Piazzolla can be played differently than this, but probably not better” (Downbeat Magazine). In 2015 Centaur Records released the second installment of Schubert’s complete works for violin and piano and his debut solo violin CD with a world premiere recording of original works by Franz Schubert. On the strength of the success of these recordings, Tomás Cotik and Tao Lin received a long-term recording contract with Centaur Records to record all 17 Sonatas for violin and piano by W.A. Mozart. Other upcoming projects include a second Piazzolla album and a disc of violin showpieces.

Committed to both performing and teaching, Tomás Cotik was Professor at West Texas A&M University, and a teaching assistant at the University of Miami (August 2010-June 2013). He served as Adjunct Professor at the University of Miami (August 2014-July 2016) and Florida Internatioanal University (2015-2016), and since July 2016, he is Assistant Professor at Portland State University. He has also given presentations at national and international music conventions, such as the Texas Music Educators Association convention in San Antonio, the College Music Society’s international convention in Buenos Aires and the American String Teachers Association national conference in Tampa. He has held master-classes throughout Texas and Florida, at Ithaca College, California State University Northridge and the North Carolina Chamber Music Institute. Upcoming residencies with the Amernet String Quartet include West Virginia University, Delaware County Community College, and California State University, Fresno. He has also acted regularly as a jury member for institutions such us the University of Miami, WTAMU University and more recently, at the New World Schools of the Arts.
