The Hong Kong Chinese mezzo-soprano, Silvana Chu, studied at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Music at the University of the Pacific and her Master’s degree in music at the Manhattan School of Music. She was the 3rd Prize Winner of the New Jersey Alliance of Performing Artists. In 2018, she was the 1st Prize and Special Prize winner of the vocal division in the Romanian International Music Competition in Japan.
Silvana Chu has made her Hong Kong debut in May 1997 in C. Gounod's Romeo et Juliette with Opera Hong Kong and Hong Kong Philharmonic. In 2019, she made her Tokyo debut and performed her winning concert at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan and Takanawa Ward Center Hall. The same year she was invited by the Romanian Music Society to perform#mezzosoprano her Vocal Recital at the Romanian Embassy in Tokyo and was recognized with the "Expoire" award at the Osaka International Music Contest in both the Art Song and Musical categories. The pandemic hasn't stopped her passion and dedication to music. During pandemic in 2021, she sang the role of The 2nd Lady in a virtual opera production of W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute with The Lighthouse Opera Company in New York City. She also held a virtual vocal recital in Hong Kong, adapting to the new realities imposed by the pandemic. In 2022, she has premiered an Iranian American opera The Threshold of Brightness by Iranian composer Niloufar Nourbakhsh with Beth Morrison Projects at National Sawdust in New York City. She has also performed a Virtual Vocal Recital in Hong Kong when all live performances were canceled due to Omicron.
Silvana Chu is active in both Operatic and concert stage in New York City. Her operatic roles include Suzuki in Madama Butterfly (October 2012), Mary in Der Fliegende Holländer, Abbess and Monitor in Suor Angelica (October 2013), Irene in George Frideric Handel's Atalanta, Bradamante in G.F. Handel's Alcina, Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, The Boy in Indian Queen, Cherubino in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Pollinesso in Ariodante, Cenerentola in La Cenerentola, Giovanna in Rigoletto (October 2016), Gertrude in Charles Gounod's Romeo et Juliette, etc. In concert appearances, she has performed for Caramoor Music Festival. She has also performed as mezzo soloist in Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria, J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion BWV 244, G.F. Handel's Messiah, W.A. Mozart's Requiem, L.v. Beethoven's Mass in C major, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G Minor, and L.v. Beethoven's Choral Fantasy in her Carnegie Hall debut (2023). She has also made her Lincoln Center debut as mezzo soloist in W.A. Mozart's Coronation Mass in Avery Fisher Hall. In 2023, she has also performed as Alto Soloist in J.S. Bach's Markus-Passion BWV 247 and Maurice Duruflé's Requiem at St. Peter’s Church in New York City. In fall 2023, She performed a Romania Concert Tour at Athenaeum in Bucharest, as well as Cultural Centers in Brasov and St. George.
Silvana Chu is also involved with contemporary Music. She has premiered several American operas, such as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by Richard Peaslee, Shangri-La by Susie Ibarra, Beautiful Warrior by Chinese composer Jin Xiang, Japanese opera Nasu No Yoichi by Kazuko Hara, and Easter Cantata by Chinese composer Huang An Lun as Mezzo Soloist. In 2023, she premiered a newly written Italian Opera Furiosus by Italian Composer Roberto Scarcella Perino at Merkin Hall Lincoln Center. She also performed a virtual production Mass for the Future by composer George M. Atwell. |
