Jerilyn Chou (Soprano)

Born: Texas, USA

The Chinese-American lyric coloratura soprano, Jerilyn Jiuan-Ru Chou,, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA); her second Bachelor of Music degree in vocal pedagogy from the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz; her Classical Operetta Academic Diploma at Konservatorium Wien Private University (KONS); and her Master of Music degree in Lied and Oratorio from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MDW). She also attended master-classes with renowned artists such as Christa Ludwig, Barbara Bonney, Helmut Deutsch, Julius Drake, and Linda Watson, to name a few.

Jerilyn Chou is a recipient of the 2021 KS Gabriele Fontana Scholarship and won several singing competitions including the Zemlinsky Prize at the 3rd International Helmut Deutsch Lied Competition, 1st place at the IMMCC Maribor Singing Competition, third place at the George London Foundation of the Friends of the Vienna State Opera Competition, and 1st place at the University of Texas at Arlington Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition.

Jerilyn Chou has performed in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa singing an array of repertoire ranging from early to contemporary classical works to pop, jazz and soul grooves. She performed the role of Valencienne in Lehar's The Merry Widow at Theater an der Gumpendorfer Straße in Vienna and Donna Anna in scenes from W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni in Texas. As a concert soloist she has sung in houses such as the Vienna Konzerthaus (J.S. Bach: Johannes-Passion BWV 245 and Johannes Brahms: Ein deutsches Requiem), the Goldener Saal at the Vienna Musikverein (Felix Mendelssohn: Paulus) and the Oriental Art Center in Shanghai, China (J.S. Bach: Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen, BWV 51). She has also sung numerous cross-over recitals including a solo concert in Brahms Saal Vienna Musikverein.

At the Salzburger Festspiele she sang first soprano with Klangforum Wien under the direction of composer Beat Furrer in his opera Begehren. Jerilyn Chou also premiered several works including Eduard Kutrowatz's Concerto Nr. 3 at the Liszt Festival Raiding, Martin Heindl's Paradise at the Steirischen Herbst Festival and the recording of Cécile Chaminade's Messe pour deux voix égales, Op. 167. She has sung under conductors such as Helmuth Rilling and Hans-Christoph Rademann at the International Bach Akademie Stuttgart and the Weimar Bach Cantata Academy at the Thüringer Bachwochen.

Jerilyn Chou will debut as Damigella 1/Sirene 1 in Francesca Caccini's La Liberazione di Ruggiero dall'Isola d'Alcina and Britomarte in Martin y Soler's L'Arbore di Diana in the Kammeroper at Theater an der Wien in the Fall of 2022. She currently lives in Vienna, Austria.
