Michael Carty (Baritone)

Born: August 28, 1978 - Toronto, Ontario, Canada

The Canadian baritone, Michael Carty, studied voice at the Univesity of Ottawa and is a graduate of Opera Lyra Ottawa’s Opera Studio where, as a tenor, he portrayed Tamino, Ferrando, Don Ottavio, Basilio, Don Curzio, Alfredo, Des Grieux, the Witch in Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, the Prince in Cinderella, Wilhelm in The Brothers Grimm and the Rooster in The Bremen Town Musicians.

Michael Carty is active as a self-employed conference interpreter and singer since January 1998. He is regularly invited to perform in recital and on the opera and concert stage in North America and Europe. With the Opera Lyra Ottawa (OLO) Chorus, his credits include Georges Bizet's Carmen, Verdi's Il Trovatore, Otello and Rigoletto, W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni and Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann and Eugene Onegin. As a member of the company’s Opera Studio, he has portrayed Tamino, Ferrando, Don Ottavio, Alfredo, Des Grieux, the Witch in Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel and Wilhelm in Canadian composer Dean Burry’s The Brothers Grimm. In September he sang the role of Laërte in OLO’s opera-in-concert presentation of Ambroise Thomas’ Mignon and in March he made his solo debut in a mainstage production with the company, singing the role of Giuseppe in La Traviata.

For ten tears, Michael Carty has been featured as a soloist on numerous occasions with the Christ Church Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys under the direction of Matthew Larkin. Highlights include George Frideric Handel's Messiah, Stainer’s The Crucifixion and J.S. Bach’s Johannes-Passion BWV 245, and numerous tours to the UK, France and the USA. He has also toured extensively with the Festivalensemble Stuttgart under Helmuth Rilling and Hans-Christoph Rademann, performing the great oratorios of J.S. Bach, G.F. Handel, W.A. Mozart, Johannes Brahms and Benjamin Britten at prestigious festivals in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Chile.

For Ottawa Pocket Opera, Michael Carty performed the roles of Donald Hopewell in Douglas Moore’s Gallantry (hgis debut with the company) and Monostatos in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. He has appeared as Goro in Madama Butterfly and Vespone in Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s La Serva Padrona (October 2009) with Pellegrini Opera. He was a founding member of Choir 21 and Songmen Six. 2020-2021 was his third season with Caelis Academy Ensemble. Recent engagements include a tour of the UK with the Anglican Chorale of Ottawa in July and performances of Cinderella at the National Arts Centre in December. He currently lives in Ottawa, Ontario.
