Jenny Carlstedt (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Åland Islands, Finland

The Finnish-Swedish singer born in Åland Islands (Swedish-speaking region of Finland), Jenny Carlstedt, studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and with Rudolf Piernay at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Jenny Carlstedt joined the ensemble at Oper Frankfurt in 2002-2003season since when, alongside her many W.A. Mozart roles (including Dorabella in Christof Loy’s Faust Prize winning production of Così fan tutte, Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, Sesto and Annio in La Clemenza di Tito), she has enjoyed great success with roles including Angelina in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Diana in Cavalli’s La Calisto, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, Tebaldo in Don Carlo, Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Smeton in Donizetti’s Anna Bolena in concert, Siebel in Charles Gounod’s Faust, La Muse / Nicklausse in Hoffmann's Erzählungen/The Tales of Hoffmann, Kate in Benjamin Britten’s Owen Wingrave, Harper Pitt/Ethel Rosenberg in Péter EötvösAngels in America, Lazuli in Chabrier’s L'etoile and Erika in Samuel Barber's Vanessa. Guest engagements have taken Jenny to many opera houses including Glyndebourne Touring Opera, Theater an der Wien, Helsinki Opera and 2009-2010 season the Royal Opera in Copenhagen as Olga in Eugen Onegin directed by Peter Konwitschny.

Jenny Carlstedt is also much in demand as a concert and oratorio singer and she has performed in several international projects with amongst others, Helmuth Rilling, Peter Schreier (both J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion BWV 244, and Johannes-Passion BWV 245) and Roy Goodman. Further examples of her versatility are performances of Gustav Mahler's Songs of a Wayfarer and L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Sibelius' Kullervo with Okko Kamu and G. Mahler's Rückert-Lieder and Lied von der Erde.

Guest engagements also featured contemporary music: in 2002 she sang Greta, the female lead role (which was written for her) in the world premiere of Lars Karlsson’s opera Rödhamn at the Finnish National Opera, where she had made her debut a year earlier as Dorabella. She also sang, with great success, the role of Harper Pitt in Péter Eötvös’ opera Angels in America. Furthermore she sang in 2011 a program of Luciano Berio songs with Ensemble Modern in Musiekgebouw in Amsterdam and recently performed a world premier piece for piano and mezzo-soprano by the young composer Nina Senk in the concert series "spur der romantik" at Alte Oper Frankfurt

Her future engagements includes some interesting Concerts. In March 2013 she will sing a new piece for mezzo-soprano and french horn, by Aulis Sallinen, one of the most important composers in Finland, which will have world premier with Finnish RSO conducted by Jukka-Pekka Saraste. In Spring she is also guest at Heidelberg Spring Festival with Ravel’s Trois Poemes de Mallarme, conducted by Matthias Pintscher and furthermore in Robert Schumann's Scenes from Goethe's Faust at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt with Sebastian Weigle. In the summer she will also make role debut as Emilia in Verdi's Othello and the title role in George Frideric Handel's Teseo at Oper Frankfurt.
