Josep Cabré (Baritone, Choral Conductor)

Born: Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

The Catalan baritone and choral conductor, Josep Cabré Cercós, studied with A pupil of Christopher Schmidt in Basle and of Jordi Albareda in Barcelona.

Josep Cabré has appeared as a soloist in numerous performances and recordings of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music, collaborating with La Chapelle Royale, Il Seminario Musicale, Daedalus, Orchestra of the Renaissance, Teatro Lirico and Fiontegara of Mexico. He is a founder member of the vocal quartet La Colombina, to which he devotes much of his professional activity. Other members of this ensemble are: Maria Cristina Kiehr (soprano), Claudio Cavina (alto), and Josep Benet (tenor). In 1992, he founded La Compañía Musical, an ensemble performing early Spanish and Latin American music. In addition to Cabré (baritone and director), this ensemble consists of Anne-Catherine Bucher (harpsichord), Ivette González (soprano), Fernando Sanchez (bassoonist), and Hugh Sandilands (laudista and guitarist). Since 2009 he has been director of the la Coral de Cámara de Pamplona. From 1994 to 2009 he was also Musical Director of the Basque Capilla Peñaflorida, where he regularly performs Spanish music from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. He has won particular acclaim for his concerts and recordings with this ensemble.

As a teacher Josep Cabré has accepted invitations from such institutions as the National Music School of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the chorus of the University of Xapala, the Flanders Festival and the Centre International des Chemins du Baroque. He is also Professor of early music at the Conservatory of the Basque Country "Musikene."
