Carolina Pro Musica was established in 1977 to promote the performance of music written before 1800 through the use of historic instruments and/or copies and in the performance practice of the periods in which the music was written. The ensemble has maintained a concert series in the historic 1892 St. Mary's Chapel in Charlotte bringing guest artists to Charlotte as well as performing a variety of music from medieval to present day. The ensemble has performed throughout the Southeast. They have received grants from the N.C. Arts Council, the South Carolina Arts Council, the Arts and Science Council of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, the Cultural Education Collaborative (Charlotte,NC) and monies from the National Endowment for the Arts. A Christmas music compact disk with funding by the Hearst Service Center of the Hearst Corporation was available for the 1997 Holiday season. It was recorded at Belmont Abbey, Belmont, North Carolina.
Their many cooperative ventures include working with other arts groups and cultural societies including the Goethe Institut-Atlanta, Charlotte Sister Cities, Viva Voca! of WDAV, the Alemannia Society of Charlotte, Austrian Cultural Society of the Carolinas, the German Church in Charlotte, The Festival Singers, The Charlotte Chapter American Guild of Organists, and Alliance Française.
Carolina Pro Musica has:
* Performed in the Southeast for colleges, universities, arts groups and schools.
* Received grants from the North Carolina Arts Council, the South Carolina Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Arts and Science Council of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Inc.
* Traveled to Charlotte's Sister City, Wroclaw, Poland in 1994 to perform and teach classes in early music in America.
* Produced a Christmas compact disk with funding by the Hearst Service Center of the Hearst Corporation for the 1997 Holiday season. The CD of medieval and Renaissance music was recorded at Belmont Abbey, Belmont, NC.
* Presented a comic Italian chamber opera and included concerts with music from Poland and Peru.
* Recreated a "Bach Church Service" for the Bach Celebration Year of 2000 including period instruments and artists from eastern USA.
* Taught in Charlotte-Mecklenburg working with sixth grade students in the history and culture of the Medieval and Renaissance periods at Northwest Middle School and Crestdale Middle School, Charlotte.
* Worked (1996, 1998, 2000) with Northwest School of the Arts (Charlotte) vocal and instrumental students to present a costumed Renaissance Feaste complete with period costumes, historic pronunciations and dance.
* Been ensemble-in- residence at Belmont Abbey College, Belmont, North Carolina since 2001.
* Commisioned a new work by NC composer Margaret Sandresky for 25th anniversary.
* Performed in London and vicinity in 2005, including Handel's House (now a museum) and Hatchlands.
* Performed in a fringe concert of old and new music, June 2009, during Boston's Early Music Festival.
* Performed a concert for the Moravian Music Festival, August 2009. |
